netbook

my baby Dell Mini 10v netbook has 44 processes that seems too much my powerful desktop has only 22 processes...both running Windows XP Home and Pro. What about you guys with netbook?
Ever since I got this baby 2 weeks ago I have been tweaking XP to make it run faster than C2D 🙂

it doesn't matter how lean you cut down the operating system (though it looks like you've got some work to do on that dell). an atom will never approach a core2 in performance.

You must not work in tech support. I have seen c2d computers that run slower than my old 486.

Never underestimate how much crap a random person can install to slow down their computer.

exaggerate much?

i don't need to work in tech support to know that an atom processor is inferior in every way to a c2d. what you are talking about is software. it has nothing to do with the hardware.

please show me some benchmarks where an atom is faster than a c2d.

You know I am kidding about C2D and if Atom is not faster than any cpu then why Intel released Atom for?

yeah that is why I posted here to find out how many processes netbook they have so I can tweak and weed them out

one reason: mostly to clear out old stock of crappy chipsets

And also to meet the demand for ultra-cheap laptops - called netbooks.

Yeah! But - still better than a 2-in screen on a cell phone. 🙂

I've seen idiots install so much crap that even a C2Q gets bogged down with it all. Had one user that had every toolbar known to man installed in IE, about 50 apps running the tray, a desktop covered in files/shortcuts, the 500GB hard disk was full to the brim with KBs of free space, etc. It took my the better part of a day to clean it up decently again.

The Atom is absolutely inferior in every way to even the Core Duos, and even the CULV Core 2 Solo's, but an idiot can easily bring a powerful system to its knees.

Bateluer thats true, but the guy was giving an example of software. you cant make an argument that an atom would do better b/c someone had a lot of crap installed on their other computer. if he took the same system and put an atom in it and it would do even worse that a c2d.

Don't worry about the processes. They don't significantly affect the speed of the O/S. This is assuming you don't have a ton of garbage installed. If it's garbage, get rid of it.

I might have to get rid of Dell programs off and see if the process down to 15 to 20 like my desktop pc

True. Regardless of what hardware you have, maintaining the software properly is important to keep it running as smoothly as possible.

Err, this should be essential. When I received my Dell Studio 14z a few months back, I booted it up once to ensure all the hardware was functional, then powered it down, connected my external DVD drive and booted from the Dell Vista DVD and wiped it clean. Runs MUCH smoother with a clean install, very snappy.

Vista? nobody want to run Vista on their netbook anymore

The concept's the same. He's just saying a virgin install is generally better than the um... cough "helpful" apps oems load their machines with. Since we're talking about it though, why not Vista? Everything I've heard says it runs better than XP on netbooks. It's a little fat if you have an SSD, but for a standard drive that's not so much a concern.
