Netbook with very small, low-res screen

I'm trying to help a friend who is overseas, they have an old Asus EEE 701 which has a screen size of 800x480. When they run certain programs that have an interface window too big for the screen, they sometimes cannot use the program because they can't get to necessary options or buttons.

Does anyone know any good workarounds for this issue?

I had one of those netbooks several months ago. If I remember correctly, there was an option somewhere, probably in desktop properties, to change the resolution to 800 X 600. Then if something was off the bottom of the screen, you could just scroll and see all of it.

Good Luck
