Netbook or tablet for pdf viewing outdoors and in sunlight.

Hello I am looking for advice on which gadget can fit my needs. I was looking at ereaders but since my primary demand is to read my collection of hundreds of page-size pdf's, everyone says I'm better off with a 7" or higher lcd or led screen. I can do this, but I need something that is easy to read in sunlight, small enough to carry easily, durably built, and that has a decent battery life (hoping for 7-8 hours or more).

In a netbook I'm looking for a 10" and here the weight matters more, I'm hoping for under 3 pounds. I want to run ubuntu on it. In a tablet I'm looking for a 7" with expandable memory and it would be awesome if I could directly connect a portable HDD to it, have it mount and be able to swap files back and forth without an intermediary computer.

Other than the hard drive option I'd really like to hear if those matte or anti-glare screens display well in heavy sunlight. Alternately, has anyone had any experience with these protecting films? I've seen videos reviews of both but no one really brought it out in sunlight and demonstrated how well the displays worked.

I'm looking at $300-400 although for a netbook I'd prefer less than 300 because I don't think I need better hardware for pdf viewing. I hear netbooks are dying in the market but all I need is something portable that can read pdf's for 4-6 years, I don't see why owning a dead class of technology will make my experience any worse.

In fact right now I'm pretty sure I should get a 10" netbook seeing as I won't need the internet or a touch screen at all and don't need much in the way of apps, so the extra price will be somewhat wasted on me. Of course I'll still consider any arguments for it.

But for netbooks I'm looking at these three and I'm wondering if the dual core atoms are enough for large pdf files, with say 1 or 2 random small programs running in the background.
Asus Eee pc 1015PEM-MU17 for the long battery, matte display, and web storage
Asus 1015PX-MU17 (battery, processor, matte display)
Samsung NB30 JP-02 (rugged design, water and impact resistant, matte display but weaker battery, single core cpu and more expensive)

Thank you

netbook is fine for you to read pdf. netbook is cheaper than tablet. I dont believe all tablets will have usb port to connect hdd to swap files, etc. Atom CPU is not very fast but good for web browsing, word processing and check your porno email...:)

Thank you, and are you saying the tablets that do have usb ports will generally be able to connect to hdd's?

And anyone else know about the glare on those screens?

IF you find a tablet with a USB port then it can probably read it normally.
You will notice those are difficult to find.

i got a cheap nook color because i hated reading PDFs and the like on my 11" laptop. hated it. unless youre going to sit it on a table, or very still in your lap, or only read a little here and there, juggling a laptop for reading is annoying.

you can find refurb NCs for under $200 sometimes, iirc. get a cheap memory card, put gingerbread on it, and go. i barely even use that laptop anymore.

Hmm good point sauron nook colors are looking good suddenly. I'm only concerned about battery life with those but I guess it's not that big of a compromise. I'm sending you a small question about it via pm. Thanks all.

I find them both equally painful to use in bright sun light; an e-ink reader might be better but rumor is that soon (3 to 6 months) samsun will have a 7 inch table tiwth s-amoled display. Those displays work well in sunlight so that's my hope (also amazon might do something interesting here). -
I.e, for outdoors there really isn't a great soution today but something soon is suppose to happen...

My Nook Color lasts over 6 hours a day of use overclocked. Hard to beat that for the size.
