I am very pc illiterate so bear with me,,,
I bought a netgear starter kit to network my pc with my kids pc,,,the instruction seemed very easy other than the fact
that they didnt instruct me to add the netbeui in my network settings,so I called technical support and he walked me through that,,I was finally able to see both the pcs and share files and printing,,so I thought this is great I did it without killing either pc,,,
Now,,I have a problem that I wasnt aware of,,anytime,,I shut my pc down,,I get a blue screen fatal exception with this error
fatal exeption occurred 0028:c15ae77cb in VXD NETBUEI (01)
+0000290B
The pc runs good and I can see both the pcs ,,other than shutting down my pc,,,
I called technical support to netgear who reinstalled my network all over again,,and still I keep getting this error,,he tells me it is an OS problem with my registry and to go to windows and type the error in and look for support that way,,that they werent trained for registry errors
Can anyone please help? I am running windows 98
Thank you so much!

ok, my suggestion is to remove the NetBeui driver from Networking Control Panel, reboot, shutdown... see if that produces error. if not... install NetBeui again and see what happens... if it does, it's probably a hardware conflict. That's probably the easiest thing to do than play with the registry for nwow.

I did remove the netbuei driver from the control panel and when it asked me to reboot for the changes,,blue screen error again,,and when I I put the driver back in ,,same thing again,,
everytime I go into the network settings and look at anything in there it keeps asking me for the windows 98 cd,,so i direct it to my windows/options/cabs and that takes care of it,,I just dont understand why it always asks me for the windows 98 cd,,its like it installs the dll files it needs, but they dont stay ,,I dunno,I am so pc dumb,,
Anyway,,I do appreciate your help timOthy

i dont think you need netbui to make the computer see each other.

you are using a hub right?
all you have to do is install TCP/IP and Client for MS networking on the PCs and it should work.

You don't need to use netbui to share files, but it's a safer option than using tcp/ip and file and print sharing. Esp. if you are on DSL/Cable.

There's a very good explanation/instructions here Link

Passerby, try uninstalling all networking protocalls and your nic. Shut down. Take the nic out of the computer. Reboot. Shutdown. Install nic. Reboot. Add networking protocalls again.

Yeah. Take everything out and start clean.

It might not fix the problems, but starting fresh is a good way to start.

I guess you are running ICS or something like sygate/wingate to share the cable connection?

not running any cable sharing of any kind yet,,,this is my first network attempt,,And the the shutting down errors are annoying enough to go any further with cable sharing,,that was my plan however to put in a cable router after networking was successfully accomplished

You're right, you can use TCP/IP, but NetBEUI is a more efficient protocol.

the reason why i asked you to remove netbeui is that it might be (1) corrupt netbeui driver or (2) something in the registry that's whacking it out.

Well, I'd definitely go with a router. Makes things more easier in my opinion than a software solution.

You should be able to get them all networked together.
Right now, it's just that there is something that giving you these errors.
A corrupt insatall or something.

That's why a clean start should help.

ok,,I broke open the pc,,tore out the cable nic and the netgear nic,,tried to remove all of the protocols,,,,then it asks for the windows 98 cd again,,I direct it to the options/cabs,,,it loads up what it needs then asks for a reboot,,,goes right back into the blue screen error,,again,,, reboot again I go into the control panel networking,,and it is all still there,,I go into the device manager and remove the nics from the network adapters and the hub there, shut down with blue screen again,,boot pc back up and it installs the hub and nic cards all over,,,they are not even on the pc,,I took them out?
but,,I guess when it needs to reboot after I remove eveything,,and I get the blue screen error,,,its not getting a chance to completely remove all the devices? I even tried to remove the entire network,,
Nothing is working,,,,,so I have put the nics back in,,put the pc back together,,and can't think of anything else to do but to refomat and recover? Is that a bad idea?

ok... sounds like you will have to go straight into the registry and wipe out the entries for the protocol in question (NetBeui). Gimme a bit to find the hive name (i love regedit weee :D)

passerby,

you can also try booting into safe mode.

If forget it exactly for win98 but it's either the shift or ctrl key you need to hold down right before the bios scree tells you "Loading Windows"

Once in safe mode (any USB mouse won't work btw in safe mode)
remove all networking protocalls and in system devices remove the nics.

Shutdown the computer.
Remove nic.

Reboot into Windows and see if you get the errors.

Side note: For those of you wishing to have your Windows installation stuff default to where you have the .CAB files on your hard drive. Start->Run->regedit. Now drill down to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE->Software->Microsoft->Windows->CurrentVersion. Now click on the Setup folder in there and find the key named "SourcePath". Right click, choose modify, then enter the path to you CAB files on your hard drive. It'll quite asking for the CD now.

Like I said...a side note. :)

Great tip Damaged.

:)

I always like to put the .cab files on a seperate partition so I can nuke my C: drive and reinstall Windows without reformatting my whole HD.

That is, until i get off my lazy ass and use Ghost.

I wanted to thank you all for your input and help!!!:)
I tried one more time and took out the nic cards and put the pc into safe mode and removed all network protocols and removed nics from device manager,,,and somehow I ended up screwing up my windows set up,,So,,I ended up reinstalling windows 98,,,I really think it needed it anyway,, I put the nics back in and reinstalled network all over,,and put in the netbeui and low and behold,,NO ERRORS!! :D
I can shut my pc down safely and I can see the other pc in my network neighborhood ,,,loads pretty fast too!
I sure hope the cable router when I get one,,goes smoother than this adventure...
Thank you all,,you have been great!!

If you reinstalled windows clean, then it was some entry in the registry that was probably corrupted and messing things up. Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner on that since I have been putting long hours at work. :( At least it's working, and that's good to hear.
