NETBEUI and WinXP

Of course, it is well known that there is no support for NETBEUI in WinXP as declared in the E:\VALUEADD\MSFT\NET\NETBEUI readme file on the CD. In the same readme though, is the description of a short procedure on how to prepare to install it if needed. Problem is that when I followed it, as a measure to solve some direct cable connection problems, the appearing to be installed protocol in the connection networking tab was again TCP/IP(!).
Does anyone have any personal experience on that or any other explanation? (give it a try if u want-it's very simple, u only copy 2 files in order to be able to "install")
Thanx a lot.

I know I had used it for a bit, but don't quite remember how it was installed. I think I right clicked one of the inf files and selected install??? I can say that everything worked fine from there on.

Not exactly sure what you are trying to do, but if you are trying to install Netbeui protocal under WinXP, then you will need your XP CD and point the installer to the "X:\VALUEADD\MSFT\NET\NETBEUI" folder.

Instructions to find and install NetBEUI are here:

Where is NETBEUI in WinXP?

After Install NetBEUI appears in the list of available protocol, there in no properties for NetBEUI since there is nothing to configure.

Make NetBEUI Default, and the sharing protocol in WinXP.

Right-click on the:

"My Network Places? on the desktop to display the ?Network Properties"

In the Network Properties Window, pull the Advance Menu, and click on advanced settings.

Choose the Adapters, and Bindings tab.

Hi-lite Local Area Connection.

The lower part of the windows shows you the available Share and Protocol.

NetBEUI has to be in first position in both settings, to be Default Protocol.

You make it first by Hi-lite NetBEUI, and move it up using the Arrow on the right side.

Uncheck the TCP/IP binding form Sharing.

It should look like this:

It should look like this:

Advance Settings Win XP.

Thanx a lot for the post Jack but trouble is that when I click on a connection's networking and follow the well known procedure that u and everyone describes, to install NETBEUI, I don't get NETBEUI to be installed but TCP/IP!! This happens on all kinds of Direct Cable Connections I ve set up under WinXP recently and if I select OK at the final step (u know after pointing to the right folder-the .inf one ok?) the protocol appearing is the already existing TCP/IP! :Q
I just don't get it-I mean I point to the NETBEUI inf file I copied from the cd and I get TCP/IP ready to install.....:(
Plz help....

P.S: I even tried pointing to the cd folder itself as a last resort -without having copied the 2 files- and it found no network protocol driver at all....I am running WinXP corporate if of any matter...

Weird, have you patched/updated your WinXP? I too had trouble trying to install Netbeui from the initial installation, then said screw it, and installed it afterwards and patching my OS using Windows Update.

Well I have the automatic update option enabled from the control panel and it has dloaded several hotfixes since then. I just visited the update site and I can't see anything related to my problem after the check for missing updates.....
Could u be a bit more specific with your case please???
