Do you view the legitimacy of a website lower if it is a .net? Harder to remember for you? Less likely to go to it? Or is a .net just as good as a .com to you? Inquiring minds want to know!

Harder to remember so unless I bookmark it I doubt I will visit it as much.

Damn.. talk about coincidence: I'm on the phone with the people from Telescopes.net because I ordered a solar filter for my telescope last week (to observe the Venus transit next week) and they never sent me an order status e-mail or any other response. I e-mailed them twice and they never replied. I usually buy telescope stuff from Telescope.com but the demand for solar filters skyrocketed for the past week, so the filter I want is not in stock at Telescope.com. I went looking around and found Telescopes.net. It showed the item in stock, so I ordered.

Now they just told me the item is not in stock... :(

One reason a real company wouldn't get both is if someone has already hijacked one of them. Really more of an issue for a startup than a major corporation, but you gotta start somewhere...

Hence my question. The .net is available but the .com is taken. I've contacted the seller, but things aren't looking great so far.

I think deep-down, I view a .com as more legitimate than a .net. If it's a blog or just articles, then it really doesn't matter to me.

There is only so much 'picking a new name' one can do. Freaking .coms are taken for EVERYTHING!!! Its ridiculous and none of them are real sites which makes it more frustrating. That said, I've come up with a name I REALLY like and don't really think I want to change it again. I've already registered the .net. Just trying to figure out if I should move forward with it even if I can't get the .com or not.

This is part of my web-marketing business. The only way to know whether a .com or.net is appropriate is to test. If you can get both the com and .net, then it's hella easy to test to see which one has the better response. I do tons of testing. Cheap and easy to test online. For my current business domain name I bought a bunch of ebay 5cent domain names and tested them. I ran this same business for years under another name. All of the ebay names tested better than the established business name I'd used for all those years.

.net requires a bit more work/creativity to get people to remember it. Once upon a time .com was the only acceptable biz dot com - But now dot net is perfectly okay as long as you can figure out how to use it. Of course dot net isn't as easy to get out there as it once was. But it's legitimate

slickdeals.net has done OK, but I can remember once upon a time having to explain to people 3 times that it was .net, not .com (today I just tell them to google it).

I imagine it helps them quite a bit these days that the .com is just a redirect to the .net.

Depends on a few variables, depending on the intended use, marketing, audience, etc.

As someone else pointed out SlickDeals.net has done very well with a .net TLD.
