.net framework 2.0

when i go to the windows update site, it shows me .net framework 2.0. what exactly is that? like what will it do for me? how does it benefit me? i tried a google search but that didnt help. should i even install this thing? i just need someone to shed some light on the program.

An mostly unsuccessful initiative my M$ to gain more control, and make more money, off of non-M$ applications. Unless something you are using wants it, dont install it. Also this is totally seperate from Net 1.1. If you have any 1.1 apps you still dont need this.
