Nest 4.0 Software issue

First time I am having any issues with my nest thermostat. After it was updated to the newest 4.0 software I am getting messages that it has a low battery and will not connect to my router.

Nest is aware of the issue and are working on a solution.

We have discovered a bug in our latest 4.0 thermostat software that affects a small percentage of our users. The Nest thermostat will continue to heat and cool your home as usual, but affected users will see a low battery warning on the thermostat, see their thermostat as “OFFLINE” intermittently in the app, and won’t be able to control them using the Nest app.

As of Sunday, Dec. 8th, we have a short-term solution and have started updating affected thermostats. We’re rolling these thermostats back to version 3.5.3, which should fix the problem. It will take a few days to reach all thermostats. Our best software engineers continue to work on a long-term solution.

We know some users have resolved the issue by upgrading the firmware of their Wi-Fi router. The latest firmware updates are usually available on the manufacturer's website.

Some Wi-Fi routers can cause the Nest Learning Thermostat to restart frequently or unexpectedly

If your thermostat is already on software v3.5.3 (check in Settings > Technical Info > Software version) but you think you are still experiencing an issue, and especially if updating your router firmware isn't solving your problem, feel free to use the form below to send us the following information

I've read of heat issues (on certain systems it can max out the heat & leave it there automatically or something), so this is news to me.

Yeah they just are getting complaints of the issue. I guess the 4.0 rollout was done early this month and the units are now getting low on their batteries.

Lots of complaints on their Facebook page as well.

I spoke with someone on the phone and they said it will charge slowly while on the wall. If I have a micro usb cable then I can connect it that way and it will charge faster. Once it connects to the internet the rollback will be applied.

Software rolled back to 3.5.3 last night so all is back to normal. I'm glad I caught the low battery when I did. I read a couple stories of the nest going dead in the middle of the night and people waking up to a ice cold house.

No issues with mine, just checked & it is running 4.0

It only controls Radiant heat in the house - no central air in our current apartment.

Do you have a common wire attached to the base? What app do you use to connect to it?

Not sure - I have red & white wires leading down to the furnace (i believe it's single stage only)
Connecting using the android app.

Mine crapped out when I was away from the house for 36 hours during the coldest day in years. I, among numerous other people from the look of twitter/FB, seem to be another victim of the 4.0 update.

Walked in to find the place in the low 50s and falling. I could hear the furnace kicking on and off every 20 or so seconds. Who knows how long that had been going on...probably not good for the longevity of the unit. Nest not showing any errors and seemingly has a good charge. Called the HVAC guys to take a look at the furnace, they disconnected the nest and jumped the contacts then the heat started to run. Called nest and they said to replace my filter (the one I replaced last month) then take it off the wall to charge. Charged it for an hour then plugged it back into the base....same behavior. At this point I said fuck it and put a spare Honeywell unit on the wall that I had just bought before I got the Nest and everything works fine.

Maybe I'll do the rollback at some point and get it to work but not this winter. Really don't need to have my pipes burst and flood the units downstairs.

yeah a lot of people were pissed off that they decided to do an update during the coldest months of the year. I think they learned their lesson(s) and will probably do future updates during the spring when most HVAC systems aren't being used all the time
