Nervous About My Temps

I just turned on my system for the first time and haven't even installed an OS yet. Just in the first 10 minutes of running (at idle obviously), my CPU temp was 48ºC. Doesn't this seem kind of high considering my system? I have 2 80mm fans in the front sucking air in and 1 80mm fan in the back (all CoolerMaster) pulling air out. I cleaned up my cable clutter, so that shouldn't be an issue. Any help would be appreciated.

My specs:

Soltek SL-K8AN2E-GR MOBO
AMD Athlon 64 3200+
Thermaltake Venus 12 HSF
1GB Corsair RAM
PNY GeForce 6800nu
Pioneer DVD Burner
Lite-On CD Burner
Rosewill TU-155 Case

You definitely don't want to do that. Exhaust should always be near cpu heatsink. Did you use Arctic Silver on the hs & cpu?
 
No, I used the thermal paste that came with the Venus 12. Would that make a substantial difference? If so, are there any additional steps I can take to lower the temp even more? I've seen most people with the Venus 12 and Athlon 64s in the mid 30s-ish range.

It would make a difference of a couple of degrees, nothing too substantial. You sure you didn't put too much of it on the cpu?

Not too familiar w/ Soltek mobo, but I know that some mobo's are off with their temp readings.
 
I'm not really sure if I put too much on the CPU. I put a pretty thin layer, but I guess it could have been thinner. Do I want to put as thin of a layer as possible while still covering the whole thing? So, if my board is reporting it wrong, would a BIOS update fix it? One more thing... So, does this definately seem too high for what I have? I don't really know what else to do besides some Arctic Silver and a BIOS upgrade. I don't know what temps are too high for an Athlon 64.
 
I have a simillar problem as yours.

I have two 80mm panaflo's as outake fans and two ZALMAN 80mm fans as intakes.

As thermal paste i didnt use Arctic Silver 5, but a thermal compound that came with my motherboard. White, sticky and suspicious but i had to use it cause i wanted to build the system and i didnt have any AS5 handy. I think i did put a bit too much on the CPU. Anyway my currently are:

CPU: 44C-45C when idle, 48-49C when load
Mobo: 24C when idle, 25C when load

Im certain that after i do some correct application of Arctic Silver5 on the CPU this weekend (hopefully), there will be definite improvement on my CPU temps. I suggest you do the same.

Those temps are neccesarily that bad. With my fans on low I idle at 40-43 and load at 47-49. With my fans on high idle is 39-42 and load is 45-46, and thats with 2 120mm case fans and a 80mm cpu fan.

Spike, im certain that after some correct AS5 application, my CPU temps will drop to more normal levels. I mean, i had your CPU temps with my AthlonXP 2400+.... 🙂 So heres hoping,
 
Do you recommend following the instructions on the Arctic Silver website (let the heatsink spread the compound) or spreading it with a razor?

Possibly. I have seen bios updates change temp readings 10-15C.
Really unless you put a thermistor directly on your CPU, the temp reading you get is what your bios is interpreting from the Winbond chip.

I would check for an update.

And yeah, Arctic Silver will help a couple of degrees. So will HS lapping if it has a rough surface.
The instructions on arcticsilver.com is the proper way to install your heatsink.
 
As I have said in the thread for the mobo, those temps are FINE. Just fine. This board has a problem with hovering around those temps using their program. Using other programs, I get like 39degrees. Don't worry about it, you are just fine.
 
I have a soltek mobo and they seem to report temperatures just a bit high. My 3500+ newcastle on stock hs/f and arctic silver 5 reported temperatures of 52 idle, and 58 load where as my watercooled setup is 42 idle to 46 load. If you use they temperature monitor program provided by soltek, it adds another 3-6 degrees celcius. Speedfan and Everest report the same temps so I rely on those. Its weird that soltek's program does this. Btw, the reported temps above are using Speedfan and Everest. I wouldnt worry too much!
 
i've heard that bios temp is high because the cpu isn't really idle at bios....😛

as for more exhaust, thats bad, u suck dust in through every little crack, and through your optical drives.

does that mb support the a64's cpu throttling feature?
 
you are worried about temps which aren't even into the 50's?
you are fine, man... check temps with the CPU under load and see what it says... if it's under 60 you are fine.
 
If CPU at full load is under 65, still no need to worry. Maybe due to mainboard sensor higher reading. Can try to update latest BIOS.
