Happy Friday morning everyone, I'm having a problem installing Nero on a Win XP Pro machine (SP1) that I hope someone can shed some light on.

Durning the install it asks for what administrative groups are allowed to burn CDs, however the dialog is blank and it wont allow me to select a group. Since it wont allow me to select a group it will not allow me to continue with the install.

I've tried rebooting, running the install from the actual msi package rather than using the autoplay menu and perhaps since it's Friday I'm out of ideas for things to try. Anyone have any suggestions for getting Nero to view the groups (or bypass since an admin will be using it anyways) so that I can finish the install?

BTW Nero (or any other burning software besides the "built-in" burning) have never been installed on this machine.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions/help.

heh-heh

It's a strange problem. I have no knowledge of this glitch to offer, only commiseration.

I use Nero on some Windows XP HE and Pro systems. Some have had Nero installed before SP1, and some have had it installed afterward. None of them have been troubled installations, nor have any of them experienced functional issues with Nero once it was installed.

Is there something odd about this system, setup-wise? It's attached to a domain, yes? Do you suppose a policy may be making your life difficult?

this machine was a clean install of Win XP Pro, SP1 was applied and than it was joined to a domain. The default administrative groups still exists (Administrators, Power Users, Users, Guests) as do the default users (Administrator, Guest). I even let it sit at that screen for about half hour in the hopes that it was just slow at reading the registry.

I had Nero installed on this machine before formatting and reinstalling (also Win XP Pro, SP1, joined to the domain). The first install had a bad motherboard so I had to replace it, the new mobo had a differant chipset so I just reinstalled windows).

I have basically the same setup at home, a clean install of Win XP Pro, SP1 applied and joined to a domain. Nero did not have any problems than (nor does it with numerous other Win XP Pro machines that I have in basically the same configuration).

Hmmm. Only thing I can think is that a policy may have removed permissions for "Backup files and directories", "Restore files and directories", and / or "Load and unload device drivers" for the admin group(s) on that one machine. Or something may simply have happened to the relevant registry entries. I guess that, if the Nero software sees that the admin group(s) don't have one or more of those permissions it might gray out the dialog??? I'm just grasping at straws here -- unfortunately.

On the Windows XP Pro SP1 machines on which Nero is working -- was Nero installed before or after they were joined to their domains?

I've done both before and also after, perhaps I should see what kind of support options are available (if any) from Ahead software.

I'm fresh out of ideas. Not that I had many to begin with. I hope Ahead support will be helpful.

download this Nero Burnrights

ftp://ftp6.nero.com/NeroBurnRightsInstaller.exe

"With Windows 2000 and Windows XP Microsoft decided to allow low level driver access only for programs running with administrator rights, because of security aspects.
But in practice there must be a way to allow CD/DVD recording for non-administrators and being able to decide which users may record CDs/DVDs and which users may not.
The way to solve this situation is to install Nero BurnRights. With Nero BurnRights, the system administrator can assign a specific group the rights to record CD's/DVD's on the system"

I've had exactly this same problem with Nero on my system, that's why I'm reading this thread now...because it's acting up again. I'm runing Win2K Pro, sp3. Nero was installed and working fine, then one day it just stopped opening when I clicked on the icon. I completely uninstalled it, removed all references to it in Registry, tried to install from my v. 5.5 CD, and I got the same problem you had...wouldn't recognize any rights...even though I'm in Administrator at all times!

So I downloaded the latest version from Nero, and that installed just fine! Only problem...the program won't open. The Nero utilities will work fine...but the damn program spins the hourglass for 5 seconds, then just sits there. Very frustrating, as before, uninstalling and reinstalling solved the problem...but not this time. Windows really sucks with these kinds of problems...I suspect Windows all the way, :| Nero worked like a dream for more than a year...but Windows doesn't comprehend the concept of long term harmony.

Good luck, I'll try that rights issue above, maybe that will solve the problem.

the wierdness continues...I downloaded and installed the latest version from Ahead (version nero55100.exe, 12/22/2002) and it works like a champ. But here's the strange part...I took the original 5.5 disc I have, installed it on another system, and it did the same damn thing...asking for for administrative groups without giving you any choices, and the Next button is grayed out so you're screwed. I then overwrote this new install with version nero55100 and it works fine. So I'm concluding it's just something buggy in that original disc, as I've had no further problems.

Or maybe something Ahaid fixed in that release, I'll download it this afternoon to see if I have any luck.
