Nero has become teh suck

Did Symantec or Roxio acquire Ahead or something? I installed Nero 8 for the first time and it blows majorly.

I think Nero has actually raised the bar for bloat. It looks and works every bit as bad as the mess that was being put out by Adaptec/Roxio three or four years ago, which drove people to Nero in the first place. I couldn't even uninstall the damned thing because the installer kept crashing. Had to use the Nero 'Clean Tool', which took about 15 minutes to finish.

Now that Nero has crossed over to the dark side, any alternatives that are as good now as Nero used to be with versions 4.x ~ 6.x? Particularly for use with Vista. I still use Nero 6.6 for Windows XP, but it has some compatibility issues with Vista.

RIP Nero as the killer app!

Depends what functionality you want. You will probably need to get a couple of titles to do everything that is integrated in Nero. Imgburn for burning DVDs and VLC for playing DVDs are very well rated.

Also, you can get the Ashampoo Burn Studio 2009 for free as I posted in in the Free Stuff forum:

http://forums.anandtech.com/me...=2277340&enterthread=y

Again, I hav read some decent reviews about Ashampoo and how non-bloated it is. But I have not used it.

I'm not interested in media suite stuff; video transcoding/encoding, audio editing tools, media library, media player, et. al. Just create and burn audio and data CD/DVD compilations with advanced options or controls over book type, overburning, boot image options, ISO handling, UDF support, et. al.

Nero Burning ROM is still the best on the market. It's solid and reliable. The installer does suck though and the whole suite is uncalled for.

PowerISO, a nice lightweight solution with unintrusive shell integration ... I like it

I love PowerISO. I also use Ashampoo Burning Studio for burning and VLC for playing.

PowerISO / UltraISO / IMGBurn ... all decent .. I have all on my pc, including Nero 6.6 & Roxio 5.x (hardly use Roxio)
You could try a Custom Install with Nero 8 and just install the basics for burning, leaving out stuff like Drag to Disc and any other bloat.
I do agree, Nero has gotten way too bloated starting with Nero 7 .. So I will keep 6.6 as it works just fine.

Just wanted to confirm that I was able to get a free version of Ashampoo burning studio 09 following the instructions in the free stuff thread.

That being said I've been using Ashampoo for a while in place of nero, I've also had good luck with CdBurnerXP and ImgBurn also.

ImgBurn for burning - UltraISO for making/editing - Alcohol 52% Free Edition for mounting to see if image is working or installing software from image.

IMO Nero is not that bloated if you uncheck all the extra options and install just the burner. It's way overpriced if that's all you want though. I used CDBurnerXP a couple years ago and liked it but there were a couple of features it didn't have that I missed, but I can't remember what they were.

ImgBurn is a 2mb install cant get much smaller for a pretty full featured burning app.

PowerISO / MagicISO for me. Very fast, clean and light interface - works for me

I just use the older version of Nero 6.6...still burns everything perfectly for me....this was the last good version IMO, the bloating started with 7.
However, that nero lite looks interesting.

I actually tried Nero 8 Essentials as well, which is supposed to be the stripped-down program previously known as Nero Express. Except Nero gutted it even further.

Nero Essentials now gives you four options; Data Disc, Audio Disc, Disc Image or Saved Project. And each is limited to one predefined type. e.g. no bootable disc creation, no MP3/WMA (CDDA only), no mixed content, nothing. The only options you get are write speed, write strategy (TAO, DAO), and whether to create a multisession disc.

If Nero Express was the "lite" version of Nero Burning ROM, Nero Essentials is "terminal lite extreme". And even Nero Essentials is laggy like a Java-based app.

But I'm going to check out Nero Lite Project, looks interesting. Its a damned shame such a project even exists. Nero actually has the distinction previously reserved only for recent Microsoft operating systems (Lite Mode Projects). Wow.
