Nero Burning problem

I am using Nero v6.6.0.1 and Optorite DD1205.
I overburn (4500mb) a cd-r without any problem. But it's having difficulty when burning cd+r.
By the end of completion, the program just halts. I cannot eject the dvd, or close the program even when I try to force it close in task manager.
And then everything seems going weird/slow/very slow (like opening a program or something). I have to hit the reset button to restart it, and eject the dvd before it enters windows, otherwise it's slowing down again.

By the way, I contacted Optorite and got response that the cd+r I use is in their compatibility list.

What media are you using?

Not all media is created equal, even from the same maker
(varies from batch to batch), so it is difficult to claim compatibilty.

(the CD+R is actually DVD+R, correct?)

Have you tried burning DVD+R(s) at slower speeds?
Have you tried different media?

The hanging (slowdown) is more likely caused By NERO
trying to TIMEOUT the app due to some error in the writing process.

Now I start to have some serious issues.

For some unknown reasons, buffer level in nero keeps up and down when burning within the last 3 days, which never happened before. It even failed burning last night.

Then I checked, secondary IDE channel properties shows the device is in PIO mode. I set and restart few times, even bios shows DMA mode 2, but in windows still shows PIO mode. It was like that the last time I checked. Now I'm frustrated.

By the way, whenever I shut down the computer and start up again, windows automatically set itself to Windows XP style appearance (I use Windows Classic style).

Any idea?

I spent near four hours to reinstall windows xp and everything...
It seems fine now, secondary ide channel is using dma mode 2.

And I found the windows xp style issue seems related to webroot's spy sweeper I installed. How to solve it? I haven't found the way yet.

One reason that Windows may revert to PIO mode is that it's getting lots of errors when using DMA mode. If it reverts to PIO again and you're using a fancy-pants round cable, try a regular 80-wire flat ATA cable, and put the drive on the end connector, not middle. Then go to Device Manager and Uninstall the IDE controller, and reboot, and let Windows rediscover it. That should "reset its circuit breaker" as regards the errors, from what I've heard.

In fact, the cable I'm using is a new one (first one keeps having error when first trying install the drive).

I hate coming back barking about problems, but have no choice ~_~
After new installation of windows xp, I keep having trouble burning.

Does Nero have any updates for your version? I hadn't heard of 6.6 before. Or maybe it just doesn't like your media or the drive is flaky.

Mine is Nero 6.6.0.1, so far there is no new update.
Strange thing is that I burned over 10 of same type of media before w/o any problem whatsoever. That was before I have problem with the PIO and reinstalled windows.

As I searched through google, there are some similiar and yet not so similiar cases concerning problems between nero and dvd burners.

I wonder if the new nero is needing newer updates... I guess we'll find out soon

Users of Matrix dvd+r's have reported mixed results with burning. Some have good results, some have good results some of the time. I have been using Ritek brand which are the best quality I could find. I send away for them as the media I see in retail stores is generally questionable quality.

I would try a higher quality media type. I have a Plextor 708-A DVD+/- R/RW and Plextor has published lists of correct media to use because of the quality issues with some discs.

It's already upgraded with newest firmware, which is to improve media compatibility.
