Nero bug: cannot copy CD

I've been using Nero for a while now, but just ran into some trouble with it trying to copy a CD. Pretty generic PC running Windows XP with just one (pretty new) CD-RW drive.

So copying a CD is a two-step process. The first part, writing an image file to the hard drive is successful. Then the source disk is automatically ejected, and a "Waiting for medium" dialog box is displayed.

After inserting a new CDR blank, the media is detected. But then, the disk is ejected and copying does NOT proceed. The funny part of the dialog box shows:

Medium type in the record: CD-R

After the blank is ejected, the detected medium type returns to "(Empty)". I've tried two media brands already.

Anybody see this error before, and know the resolution? I Google'd and saw only a few references, but nothing helpful.

The drive is verified to be good; I've burned a new "ISO compilation" onto a 4x CD-RW earlier. Apparently it's a bug in Nero's CD copy feature? And it's been working fine as a CD reader.

FWIW, I'm currently using the latest Nero in demo mode, but I could uninstall that and then try the OEM bundled Nero CD (and also update to the latest version).

Edit:
After exiting & restarting Nero, it gets even stranger. Now the CD-RW drive isn't even detected by Nero, so the only available recorder is a virtual "Image Recorder".
 
This sounds like a problem with your hardware, not Nero. Check your IDE cable, ensure it is connected firmly at both ends. Try a different cable. If possible, see if your burner is the problem by testing it in another machine.

The same thing happened to me. I spent months trying to figure it out, but in the end, just moved on to another burning program. I'm now using NTI CD-Maker and it copies fine.
 
Sounds like you might be trying to copy a music CD of the newer variety. They cannot be copied.
 
What model CDRW drive is it? Which Demo version of NERO?
Not all drives are supported in Nero (especially in older versions).

You would do better installing the OEM version, then upgrading.

It's a khypermedia branded drive; made in Malaysia IIRC. I'd have to do some research, but it's probably a benQ drive.

The demo version of Nero was simply the latest version from the web site.

Anyhow, I installed the OEM'd Nero Express and that copy a CD just fine, before & after updating to the latest release. Unfortunately, try as I may, I cannot get it to run the full-fledged Nero; somehow the OEM'd installation locks in as Nero Express, much to my dismay. This is my first experience with Nero Express, and I think it's a good improvement in ease of use. But since I'm used to Nero, I actually don't mind it's terribly-designed UI.

No, this is not a copy-protection issue. The hardware works, and I'm not at all worried about the cable or configuration.

When I have a chance, I'll install an OEM Nero CD that was bundled with another drive, although it claims it's locked into the particular manufacturer. I'd like to be able to choose between Nero Express (good for newbies) and Nero - Burning ROM. At least Nero is being bundled nowadays instead of Easy CD Creator. 😉
 
you could also be trying to overburn a cd without realizing it and not have overburning enabled..
