Nero and burners question

I purchased a Lite-on cd burner that came with Nero 5.5. I am now building a new system with a Plextor DVD burner. It is my understanding that the version of Nero that came with the CD burner is machine specific and probably won't work with the new DVD burner. Anyone have experience with this problem? If that is correct, what is a reasonably priced alternative since I also have read that "Roxio" packaged with the DVD has some "issues", and is that correct?

Are we sure that the Nero 5.5 won't work enen though I will be using both burners in my system?

It all depends on the version of Nero that you have. If it came with your burner, it's likely OEM and will only work with that particular burner. My Lite-on 52x burner came with Nero 5.5 and it was the same way. The easiest way to tell is to load Nero on another system with a CD-RW drive, or put a different CD-RW drive in the system that you are using now.

Regardless of what you find, you also need to realize that Nero may not have support for the DVD burner. With it being a Plextor, I am fairly sure that the support is there, but you may to upgrade the software anyway.

Would the Roxio software also be "machine specific and then only good with the Plextor DVD burner that it was packaged with, and therefore no good with the Lite-on CD burner?

I had Nero 5.5 OEM linked to one burner, and installed a second burner. Nero wouldn't work with the new burner, so I got a copy of Nero 6 that would work with both.

You are correct, the bundled software would only work with the drive it came with. Do as suggested earlier, get a full version of Nero. Gogamer.com has the full version of 5.5 for around $10, if you update it to the latest version of the 5.5 software it will support your DVD burner. Nero 6 goes for about $50, I don't know where to get a cheap copy of it.

imho in such a case a crack is justified ... I mean you got an OEM for burner 1, and you got an OEM for burner two. but you cant use version 1 with burner 2 and vice versa... I just got a crack for my nero, because they have no possibility to meld the allowances (it should be possible to add OEM2 into OEM1 and then have it working for both burners. without going into illegality.)

I agree with you boran, and I am more than irritated at this point. When you buy these burners they make a point of claiming that it comes with premium burning software. I have a friend who told me that he tried to install 2 software burning packages and one did not like the other being on his machine, created numerous problems for him. If I understood more about cracks or wasn't afraid to screw up my machine with some infested download I would go that route. The cheapest I can find nero 6 ultra is $79.95 plus tax and shipping form outpost.

These bastards think we are made of money and are all pirates are thieves - bullsh*t.
