Why can't I burn my rewrites at 4x? Nero only gives 2.4x as an option. I'm using v6.0.0.5 (I think) and their website says the PX-708A has been supported since v5.5.10.49b. I'm using the common Fujifilm DVD+RW discs from BestBuy. What gives?

probably b/c v5.5.10.49b came out after v6.0.0.5... they continually update the older versions so that they can have up to date burner support but since Nero 6 is completely independent of 5 you really can't compare the two when it comes to burner compatibility. the latest version of Nero 6 is 6.3.0.0 or greater and the second number would indicate a relatively large update while the last one only changes the burner compatibility. I would suggest updating to the latest version and trying again...

It says in the specs that it burns DVD+RW at 4x and DVD-RW at 2x so I'm guessing here but it could be the quality of the media at fault here. I know I recently purchased some "eperformance" DVD+R's which were 4x but they would only burn at 2.4x. It turned out that the DVD's were over rated.

[edit]

Just been looking again at the specs of the PX-708A and the spec sheet is not clear...for instance why would the spec sheet say -

ReWrite

DVD+RW
4X: 5.400KB/s (CLV)
2.4X: 3.240KB/s (CLV)

DVD-RW
2X: 2.700KB/s (CLV)
1X: 1.350KB/s (CLV)

CD-RW
24X: 3.600KB/s (CAV)
10X: 1.600KB/s (CAV)
4X: 600KB/s (CLV)

I guess it's just the speeds it will burn at, but why mention the lower burn speeds?

I'm using these Fujifilm "for Data and Video" +RW discs. It doesn't list a speed anywhere on them, so I kinda assume they are 2.4x. I thought this drive was supposed to burn at higher speeds on slower media though.

It does burn faster on DVD+R i.e. some 4x media will burn at 8x which I can confirm as I have done this myself. :)

prolly the media's fault

i bought a spindle of FujiFilm -Rs and assumed they were 4x but they were 2x. they didn't have any speed labels.

the PX-708A rewrites +RW @4x .. just need the right media.

not all media can be written faster than rated. that's the media's capability and not the drive.

It is the media. With TDK media, mine will burn at 8x with DVD+Rs but with Optodisk DVD+R 4x, it only burns at 4x.

Actually it is all due to the media you're using. Get better media and you'll be able to burn at 4x DVD+RW.
