Demo is out for download. :)Link. It's version 6.0.0.9; those who bought it in store prior to its release might want to download the update (I believe those were 6.0.0.0, correct me if i am wrong). Checked and seemed no one has posted this yet, so dont yell repost!:D

yeah who wants to be a guinea pig? :D nero 5.x works fine for me

I volunteered for that position out of curiosity... plus I like to see what's improved since Ahead is too lazy to provide screenshots for us wondering. Do note I did not test this for a long time, as I reverted back to 5.5, explained later.

* The button toolbar is now larger and can be rearranged by category (there are toolbar drag bars). That's a plus for me.
* While I have never bothered to test out Nero Express, the New Compilation window is better (some options that were radio buttons before are now drop-down menus). Labeling is now much much better, as it now remembers the previous label you've used before. This will make labeling multiple volume sets an easier task (such as archiving your multimedia, videos, mp3s, etc.). Saves me the trouble of the last volume number I used.
* Deleting files from compilation now prompts for confirmation. It's something I didn't like as I know what I want to put in anyway. Unsure if there's an option to disable this.
* The burning CD dialog no longer becomes a separate window but instead replaces the program GUI with its own. Unsure if this is a good thing or a bad thing. No opinion on this yet.

I think overall it's a good upgrade, if it works for you. Reason I say this is because when I tried to use it, it refused to work. The app runs fine up to the point when I tried to burn the compilation. I'd get an error saying that the 'drive is in use by another application', when I am positive that there are no applications running that would be using it in the first place. This also continue to happen after a reboot, just to make sure it is not something I may have ran before but forgot to exit. Because of this, I dumped Nero 6 and gone back to 5.5. So now I wonder when those morons at Ahead will get their butts in gear and fix that problem. Moral of the story? We all know that one... "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."

If Nero 6 works for your setup, by all means keep it. The GUI improvement is much needed, especially for the buttons. If you question if it'll work, you've nothing to fear. Your currently-working version of Nero will still run without giving you headaches.

I installed Nero 6 on both my computers and seems to work OK, not sure about the menu changes yet but I think its just a case of geting used to them, I have been using 5.5 for some time now so have kind of got used to the way it works
. Burnt an Audio cd just now and that went well, the menu here is different, when you click on ADD button to add tracks a whole new window opens. now if that window is full size you can't see the bar at the bottom of the screen that tells you how much room you have left, you just need to resize the windows so thet you can see both. Also a small point, when you download the demo and run it , it asks if you want to UPGRADE your 5.5 copy, of course most of you will say yes, the problem is that it overwrites your 5.5 with the demo ver 6.0. I havn't seen any way of going back, so anyone thinking of trying the demo should make sure they have the original copy and serial number to reinstal if they dont intend to buy Ver6 after the 30 days are up.

A little update to my own little problem, I suggest you keep note of it in case someone asks you about the same problem.

"Drive is in use by another application" in Nero 6 -- Disable the "IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service" service. Setting it to manual is not enough (when I went to disable it, I saw the service running). This'll let Nero 6 burn instead of complaining/bitching about little things like that. Yet oddly enough, previous versions of Nero never complained. Strange, isn't it? This solution and problem applies to Windows XP users (Pro or Home or both, I do not know, someone confirm?).

The only problem i ran into with this version is, i was making a copy of a vcd, when it was burning the image, my computer was a slow as hell, after burning my computer ran fine. I checked my processes and nero was using 79mbs of memory. Dunno if that has anything to do with it...

If you have lots of memory, Nero will allocate 80MB of memory for 'Ultrabuffer'. It'll set to a specific amount according to how much memory you have. I set mine to manual and put in a more sensible amount, like 64MB (under Preferences). I never had any problem with the program eating CPU cycles/time though. But this explains why Nero appears to consume 80MB.

Question -

I have the OEM version of Nero 5.5 for my Lite-On CD-RW, and it works just fine. I just purchased the Optorite 0203 and since Sonic MyDVD is useless, I need a decent authoring package.

I saw on the Nero site that I can upgrade to 6.0 from my 5.5 OEM for $49.99. Anyone have any experience with this? Is it a good deal? Does it work?

Another question - my Nero 5.5 is tied to my Lite-On drive; it won't work with any other CD-RW (I've tried). Say I get the Nero Upgrade serial #, then my Lite-On goes kaput and later on I decide to wipe my hard drive. Does anyone know whether I can reinstall Nero Ultra without first reinstalling my 5.5 OEM? Or - could I install the 5.5 OEM without the Lite-On, then upgrade to 6.0 Ultra and have full-funtionality?

Basically I'm asking if I would be screwed if I bought the upgrade and my Lite-On dies one day.
Thanks!

According to their online shop, they have a section for those wanting to upgrade from 5.5 OEM, 5.5 Retail, and 6 OEM. Through deduction, it should be possible to use an upgraded Nero 6 with any burner if you installed 5.5 OEM for your Lite-On drive. You can always fire off a question to their email addy if you want to know for sure. Though I question if asking them is a good idea in the end...

Thanks for the speculation. I may just have to voyage into the unknown and do this without any heads-up.

I'll let you all know how it turns out...

they make a quality product...after using 5.5 for some time, i bought 6.0 ultra...the UI is nice, has improved features, there is always going to be people that hate everything...you get alot of features with this product and it is nice with the choice of using the express interface for some end users to the more advanced for those of us that like to tweak

Thanks Chunkee -

I'm pretty much sold on Nero Ultra; my worry is whether buying the $49.99 upgrade for my 5.5 OEM is going to bite me in the end if my Lite-On ever dies.
