Nero 5.5 can't count?

I got Nero 5.5 with my Lite-On LTR-2410B CDRW drive for Christmas. The drive works great as does Nero, but I've noticed a peculiar 'annoyance' with Nero... I won't call it a 'problem', but it is definately irritating. When I start a new multisession data CD disk and add files, the status bar along the bottom adds up the total data size of the session accurately. But as I add more files on later sessions, the status bar is anywhere from 20mb to 50mb too high. For example, if I've got a CD with about 150mb of data, then I add another 150mb on a separate session, Nero registers the total CD space consumed as 350mb whereas Windows registers it as 300mb. If I try to add the full capacity of 700mb of data onto a 700mb blank CD Nero says there isn't enough space on the disk. Any idea what causes it?

Hmmm? I have the same drive + nero as you and have not encountered this yet but I have only burnt a few 700mb disks.

I think there may be a slight newer revision of 5.5 available for download from www.ahead.com

I don't suppose it's just that when you use multi-session there are some inefficiencies that cause it to use a bit more space than one session? But I guess 50mb on 300mb is a bvit wasteful.

it has to re-write the table of contents. That wastes space on the disk and accounts for the loss. There's no real way around it.

Basically it goes from:

TOC-LEADIN-DATA-LEADOUT

to

TOC-LEADIN-DATA-LEADOUT-NEWTOC--LEADIN-DATA-LEADOUT

And only the first session has a space dedicated to just it for the TOC and leadin/out, you can write in the TOC space but that's called overburning and is another discussion.

Oh, so that's just Nero being Nero? Whew, that's a relief... ... ...and at the same time, really irritating. ^_^;;; Thanks!

It's not just Nero, it's multisession being multisession. Adaptec/Roxio will do the same as will pretty much any multisession CD-r burning software.

Oh, that's even better then! Here I was wondering why everyone praises Nero as being uber-kickass if it tags on an extra 20-something megs on multisession... good to know that ALL burner progs do that, not just Nero. Thanks again!
