Nero 5.5.6.4 won't start in Win2k - problem while accessing the registry!

I have a BusLink Firewire CDRW (for writing) and a Creative 16x DVD (for reading). I use Win2k. Both drives work fine when it comes to reading data, but try as I might I can't get Nero started (other programs won't recognize my drive, but since a Nero CD came with the BusLink drive I asssume they are compatible).

Every time I try to start it, I get this error: "Nero initialization failed because of a problem while accessing the registry!". I have no other burning apps installed. What can be the problem?

Are you logged in as Administrator? am pretty sure you have to be with Nero.

Yep, I am logged in as Administrator. I have access to second computer, with pretty much identical parts, except a different burner, and Nero works fine on it. Could this really be a registry problem or is it something totally unrelated?

Weird.... I have the same version I besides enabling a security policy as explained here:
Another Thread!

I had no problems, did try reinstalling it, could be that you didn't install it as administrator!!

Nope, I have definitely installed it as Administrator (multiple times, in fact). I have narrowed it down to an incompatibility with Nero's WNASPI32.DLL (is the ASPI layer even used with Firewire?). I'll try to get in contact with Ahead to sort this out...

Yap, nero and other burner programs use the ASPI layer to communicate with the recorder....
try checking if there is another file with that name in the system!!

Yes, but I thought the ASPI was only for the IDE/SCSI interfaces, not Firewire.. Anyhow, I removed all copies of wnaspi32.dll from my system, and installed the latest version of it (directly from Nero's site, in fact) to the Nero folder, but I still get the same problem.

Here's another clue though! When there is NO wnaspi32.dll in Nero's path, it immediately and instantly gives me the error. When the file is present, it takes a few moments before the error appears. Does this point to the fact that perhaps its just a lack of support for my drive? Are there any other programs I can use instead of Nero which support Firewire drives? So far I tried: Nero, CDRWIN, Fireburner, and Blindread/write.

Well, when I had a parallel port burner... Nero needed the ASPI layer as well as the parallel-ide
drivers installed... don't know with FireWire but it should be the same..

I think you should contact Ahead, or check their HelpTool....

<< Yes, but I thought the ASPI was only for the IDE/SCSI interfaces, not Firewire.. >>

some other devices use custom layer to pretend to be SCSI. An older version of the parallel-port Zip software messed up ASPI to the point where it worked but the "real" SCSI CD burner on the PC stopped working properly.
