I just finished reading a short tale in this C book about some computer science students, or something similar, who grew tired of walking the distance to the soda machine, only to find that it had either run out of what they wanted, or else it had just been refilled, and would thus dispense uncooled soda.

So they wired it up to track refill times, as well as the number of bottles dispensed. This information was then made accessible by telnet commands or something like that.
I think the author said that they eventually linked it to the network so that the soda machine could be checked from anywhere on campus.
