USS = United Star Ship. Why is the *new* 'Enterprise' called USS without the United Federation of Planets existing yet? Who knows. Probably has the same meaning. UN star ship? No way of knowing - they really didn't "flesh out" the universe and backstory enough before they started writing.

Anyway, HMS would be wrong in any case - no monarchies on Earth during that time period.

UFPS would have been a more accurate abbreviation, anyway.

How about....what are all Federation ships given an "NCC" number? NCC-1701 is the Enterprise, for example, NCC-2000 is the Excelsior, etc?

That's the ADB creation I was referring to. It's kinda entered general circulation at this point, the company has been around for a while (since 1979).

It may even well have been the "semi-official" word at some point - but, as you can see by the link, that's NOT the current word.

Probably has to do with Roddeberry's late-life conversion to wholesale pacifism. The newer Trek series "bibles" require writers to hold that Star Fleet is not a military force and has nothing to do with anything military.

hey I used to play SFB until a few years ago about the only way to play now is online though, and everyone is like a grand master.

What, in SoCal? C'mon, there's gotta be a lot of SFB'ers down there. Central Oregon has at least one, now (*cough*me*cough*), I can't imagine there aren't a bunch down there.

Because it was named for the USS Enterprise the US aircraft carrier in WWII. It was picked because the ship was never hit by the Japanese throughout the Pacific theater, it became legendary because of that.

there are actually quite a few, including the guy that Deth O'Kay (Orion character) was modeled after. a couple "gold hat" winners too, they beat me in like 3 turns.

LOL - yeah, I can see how that would get old.

I never got into the tourney stuff, though. WAY too cookie-cutter. I like a lot of variety in the ships - honestly, "Basic Set" stands on its own as perhaps one of the best games out there. I mean, I've *got* all the modules (even got the recently printed "Master Rulebook" with ALL the new rules in it, in order)...still....just, plain, "Basic Set" is a blast to play some times. Or, at least, the 'early war' ships.
