^He's living in an apartment so he won't have to worry about that. Even still, between the computer and monitor, it'll be a good 100 lbs of electronics. Laptops are easy to take and hide. This behemoth, not so much.

Hmm, I never thought of using a TV as a monitor. What are the advantages and disadvantages?

size at low price(relatively) is superior at hdtv.
resolution is inferior. 30" monitor has 2x the resolution of an 1080p hdtv. so video is fine. at larger size the gui/text becomes unpleasant, too coarse a resolution for the size. this of cours e doesn't matter if you have one hdtv and one regular monitor connected.

I would recommend against any screen over 24" for regular desktop use. It starts getting a little large, and most desks won't be sized appropriately.
Also, TVs can be a little hard on the eyes since they tend to be blurrier and/or brighter than monitors. Colors get washed out if you turn down the brightness, making it look like crap. Stick to a real computer monitor for computer monitor use.

Some are, as are most recent NVIDIA GPUs. Whether your software takes advantage of it is another thing. I actually have to validate cards for dual-link HDCP at work. I use a Dell 3007 for that, as our 3008 does not support it.

Jesus dude you have to be the most awesome uncle ever. A present like this to me is the EQ of getting a brand new sports car as a graduation present which is exactly the same thing. Being a gamer myself and being into the online roleplaying games AKA MMORPG's let me see what I could put together as a dream pc. And please dont take what the others are saying to heart. Being of an odd generation some find it hard to treat good deeds with awesome gifts but I completely get it. Sounds like your nephew did well in school and has shown some good morales and responcability etc and you want to show him how proud of him you are with an awesome gift.

Here Goes.

Now this is leaving out a few things like the tv tuner and the keyboard + mouse but im up to
4106.86

You could also change a good bit of these out but this is just a rough draft for an MMO gamer. Good luck and hopefully you will find what you are looking for.

You the man! Thanks.

Don't forget the mouse and keyboard

Logitech G9 Gaming Mouse - $89

Logitech G15 Gaming Keyboard - $89

I have both and can't live without them. The grips on the mouse tend to wear off with heavy use though, but you can buy replacement grips

I think everyone can probably agree that you want to go with Intel core i7 and about 12GB of ram (maybe 6GB)
I would go with this processor http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16819115202 Its 280 but performance is about the same anyways as the 590 one. Also you could easily and safely overclock this to be as fast or faster as 590.

Go with the dual video cards 4890s for around 400.

Pick out a case you really like. And a couple TB drives. And you have a really good base system. I would do more research on the 30" lcd. I have used a 42inch plasma as a monitor and the fonts and such sucked. I think it would be smarter to buy him a awesome 24" monitor and a LCD for a sweet dual monitor setup. Wit hthe 24" going to be way better for more ocmputer based taks, and the LCD can be used as tv, gaming, movies and dual monitor.

Also I dont know why people think your nephews house is gonna be a frat house lol. Get him a sweet disk where he can put his tower safely. I still think all of this can be done at around 4k

You should be able to get a high end machine with a awesome dual monitor set up for about 4k. Also he will need Windows 7 in the next few months, so i would either use the RC which is free from microsoft, or buy a cheap version of vista. Windows 7 is bad ass and should be on a high end machine. Also since TB drives are only about $80 i would prob get 4 and setup a raid 5, which gives the redunctace of mirror and the speed of stripping.

Did you ever dorm...?

Yes, and nothing got stolen - ever. Nothing from our suite either - in fact, none of my friends had anything stolen either.

Lock your door, its not hard. Bitch your roomate out if he doesn't.

Eh dude, I'm sure a bro will spill beer on it rendering it to being a door stopper.

I'd really more worry about someone walking in and walking out with it. Dorm rooms are notoriously not secure.

Or, just use some of that $4000 budget and figure out a way to secure it to the wall.

I've seen both happen actually. One of my friend's roommates spilled beer, shorting out his ~$200 MB. Luckily the roommate paid for it.

The only time I've heard of someone's PC being stolen was my friend's Macbook, however he didn't lock his suite or room door.

Just get a laptop lock if you're that paranoid. I believe most desktop cases have a hole for it.
