I think a new thread needs to be started b/c apparently some people are more concern about telling others of their own view and values in life instead of simply focusing on the question asked. Suggestion to leave out personal details like for a kid going to college and it being a gift in your next ask for help thread. You may want to start off the next thread with some specific parts you already settled on already and get feedbacks on those as a starting point. I was irritated b/c I was hoping to read some nice replies on some high end parts but instead got the "go buy a laptop b/c we disagree with how you want to spend your money".

no one likes giving advice to someone with more money than sense. those people typically just shop retail.

even if he just posted a thread asking for the best gaming rig for 4000 bucks, people would still tell him it's a ridiculous waste.

When you ask others for free advice, you are going to get a wide range of input. Some of it may be irrelevant to your question. Some of it may be bad advice. Some may be good advice, but not what you wanted to hear.

Unless those supplying the free advice are rude or obscene, I suggest simply ignoring the comments you don't think are relevant.

I actually went through newegg and put together what would be my ideal system right now, regardless of price. It comes to well under $4000, unfortunately for you.

2 x 4890 - 400
http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16814161276

Core i7-950 - 570
http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16819115211

Asus P6T X58 - 250
http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16813131359

Corsair 750W PSU - 110-20=90
http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16817139006

G.Skill 6GB DDR3 1600 - 95
http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16820231247

2x 7200.12 1TB drives - 180
http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16822148433

Intel X25-M 80GB SSD - 314
http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16820167005

LG BD Drive - 160
http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16827136155

4890s are actually available for just $150 each, check the hot deals section. You could buy three of these if you really wanted, but I don't think the heat and noise output and driver hassle is even worth the small performance increase. You can buy more ram, but it will only limit overclocking and won't help much, double that order if you think it's worth it, for 12GB. There are more expensive motherboards, but all they offer over this is ridiculous power management which can help overclocking, which you said you want to discourage. There is a slightly faster (5% in apps) processor available for $1000 but I have to recommend against that...

Add in a nice case like the P190 and it should come to around $2300 after shipping. Then you can use whatever money you want for a nice lcd and everything should fall under $3000. You could spend more, but this really is about as good as it gets.

I suggest buying him a $2kish or so machine now and save the other $2k and buy him one in 3-4 years, that way he will have a top notch machine for the entire period.

With a little forethought on selecting high quality case/PSU/disk drives you can probably even buy the parts for an upgrade for $1k or less.

Edit: I see your *Want* to spend the money what I/others are suggesting is simply that there is quickly diminishing returns on money spend on hardware past a certain point.

Those money will have much more value to you and to him by being spend either on an upgrade later, an additional laptop (for notes/group work) now, a dual monitor setup, or something completely different (I am sure you can think of something else to buy him as well).
So don't be so tunnel visioned on thinking you have to buy what you set out to, that you disregard solid advice when it is thrown your way :)

Hmm, I never thought of using a TV as a monitor. What are the advantages and disadvantages?

The lower resolution 1280x720p on 30"~ LCD TVs might be a problem for some people, though I haven't looked too much, I'm sure there are 1080p 30" out there. If you are using HDMI->DVI Connection to the video card, then it'll be just like a monitor.

Another advantage is to save on space, since having a LCD TV, it will have an internal tv tuner built in, which makes it nice for dorm rooms in terms of that you don't need to get any extra equipment and have a TV/Monitor in one.

All right, thanks. I think I will build 4 of these and put them on a shelf in my billiard room that I never use. Oh, it's starting to rain. Excuse me I need to go turn on my sprinkler system.

Ah, yes. The resolution. I believe I will have to ask my nephew which he prefers. Thank you.

$2300 - $2600 is probably where you want to be for the computer if you want to go for a large LCD as a monitor. The games and accessories can add up as well. Figure $60 for each game and don't forget about the O/S. You may want to consider to getting a 24" lcd for a monitor and then buying a 42" LCD/Plasma from all those deals going on.

Jesus dude you have to be the most awesome uncle ever. A present like this to me is the EQ of getting a brand new sports car as a graduation present which is exactly the same thing. Being a gamer myself and being into the online roleplaying games AKA MMORPG's let me see what I could put together as a dream pc. And please dont take what the others are saying to heart. Being of an odd generation some find it hard to treat good deeds with awesome gifts but I completely get it. Sounds like your nephew did well in school and has shown some good morales and responcability etc and you want to show him how proud of him you are with an awesome gift.

Here Goes.

Case:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16811129043
175.00

Motherboard:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16813131390
449.99

CPU:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16819115211
569.99

Ram:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16820145242
2 Kits for 12gb Total Ram ( 288.00 )

Video Card:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16814130473
589.99

Power Supply:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16817139007
229.99

Burner:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16827136152
24.99

Blue Ray Reader:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16827136133
109.00

Storage Drive AKA Secondary Hard Drive:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16822136284
94.99

Performance Drive AKA Main Hard Drive
http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16820233085
699.00

Windows:

174.99

Monitor
http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16824236047
329.99

Speakers:

Now this is leaving out a few things like the tv tuner and the keyboard + mouse but im up to
4106.86

You could also change a good bit of these out but this is just a rough draft for an MMO gamer. Good luck and hopefully you will find what you are looking for.

That's just a bunch of expensive stuff in a list. Firewolf's system will give 95% of the performance for half the price...

Also, dual monitors. They make everything better, and it's a better use of money than a $450 mobo and $700 SSD.

Another idea would be to build one of the $2500 systems and then buy a $1500 laptop to "take notes" in class.

Wow that is one hell of a system. You're pretty much set for the next 5 years on that thing. Just a few quips about that setup...

Why a GTX 295? I think a 4890 xfire is better than a single GTX295, and a good $200 cheaper. Put the money towards some other nice accessories.

With that kind of budget, don't settle for a steel case. Go all the way with a nice Silverstone or Lian-Li case. Silverstone TJ-09 comes in mind...
http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16811163073 (Also comes in silver).

The CPU you could go for a cheaper 920 or 940 and overclock, but that's your call.

For speakers, there are better options than Logitechs. The Klipsch 5.1 set used to rock, but they don't seem to be in stock anymore.

That SSD is ridiculous!

And finally, at this price, why not put in a watercooling system? Then you leave room for some massive OCing if it ever comes to mind.

no i think he wants quality. And for good quality you go for the name brand that has a good rep. As I said with my suggestions it was just a rough draft with much subject and room for changes. I was going for what I would consider a dream machine but what I consider a dream machine might not be what the next person thinks is a dream machine. Feel free to make any counter suggestions or what have you.

My personal preferances are
Intel
Nvidia
Asus
LG

There are going to be MANY counter suggestions that rival what I placed in there and that is completely acceptable. Keep them coming as the more suggestions he gets the more options he will have to play with for the final choice.

Like adding a DVD burner when the BD drive is already a DVD burner

For the future, instead of posting the goals of the system (which is why you're getting the don't spend 4k advice), just request "I need to spend 4k on a system, help me do it". You'll get more replies in line with what you're looking for.

Good luck and I know your nephew will enjoy his new rig.

He has a budget. He does not want a laptop. He does not want to overclock. Like anything in life, the first 90% can be achieved easily. But if you want to be better or top notch, its much more. So he wants an insane over the top system and I see nothing wrong with that. I see more wrong in people criticizing him when this thread is clearly not about "should I give a college student an ultimate PC" but asking for help on the components to maximize his budget. Luxuries vs just having the necessarities for life is a huge topic of debate that will never end on its own.

darkrisen2003 list is good but I would really drop the SSD and pick up 3 1 TB sata drives along with a WD RAPTOR 10,000 RPM. Single video card maybe is better b/c not every game utilizes SLI/CF.

You know sometimes when I post here the old George Goble line comes to mind: "Do you ever get the feeling that the whole world is a tuxedo and you were a pair of brown shoes?"

OP: If you wanna get your nephew a badass PC, try
http://www.voodoopc.com/#/productsfirebird
It's not top of the line on power, but it's small, powerful, and aesthetically pleasing.
Or you could go alienware if you want to something just all out powerful. Or RAID some SSD drives together for super fast drive performance, get the top of the line I7, load it up with 12GB of ultra fast ram, get an SLI capable motherboard, and throw in two GTX295s and you're good to go.
However, Windows 7 is coming out soon, as are ATI's DirectX 11 video cards, so it would be wise to wait as long as you can this summer before buying.

BTW, the value of a laptop in college is not to be underestimated. I'd save $300 or so of that $4000 and pick up your nephew a netbook to go with the desktop.

If it hasn't been said before, I'd like to point out that trying to combine a laptop and a gaming platform is asking for trouble. Sure, it saves space, but carrying a 12 pound brick to class is not the way to go.

I had a decent desktop and a fairly damn good, light, high battery life 12.1" lenovo (x61t) and it is great for class. It is about the same weight as another book in your bag.

Neither will get stolen if he/his roomate locks up their room.
