They both suck. If you didn't want to hear that you shouldn't have posted this thread.

And I think the 240sx sucks. Even the viper would suck if you didn't like driving fast. It all depends on what you're looking for. :)

The thing is the Neon and Cavalier suck no matter what you're looking for, unless you want a car that is less reliable, slower, and has a lower resale value than anything from Japan or Europe. The only cars that suck more come from Korea.

with the new SX you get a 7 year warranty and 0% financing.. honestly that's why i got my Neon else I would have waited and gotten an SE-R (which i am glad i didn't now)
the SX2.0 is a sweet car, i've driven the new 2003 R/T, it's really nice.. you'd like it alot.
the Cavalier is butt ugly, but it's an okay car.

You guys perfer the look of the neon over the cav? I find the cav looks a bit more sporty.. but kind of a cheap sporty.. the neon doesn't really look that sporty, but its a more refined look.. doesn't really look as cheap as the cav does.

As I have stated, I know the cars aren't the greatest... but I am only going to have either one for 3 years.. I am not buying it remember.. either one should run great for the 3 years.. ya, they fall apart and start having problems after that.. that is why I am only keeping it for 3 years

Just remember that probably 90% of the time you'll be looking at the inside of the car instead of the outside.

I may have overlooked some cars.. is there anything else that is any good in the same price range as the base model neon/cav? I would prefer 2 dr, and I wouldn't mind a hatchback, but I dont know if that will happen. Gotta be standard too .. im thinking possibly Civic.. I will have to check with my local dealer tomorrow to see what the lease payments break down to

Civic is a bit more I think.. hmm
it's hard to get econo cars like this in 2 door
easiest to find like that is the cav.

yes, it's a very bad looking car.. but they're GOOD cars. i honestly think the 2 best looking small cars are the SX2.0 and the civic.

I have a 2000 neon and have yet to have any issues with it at 5xxxx miles. It is in the shop now, however. But that is because my girlfriend met the bad side of a group of trees ;)

Neon is my choice of the 2. I would seriously look into other budget cars...maybe check out some of the better used cars to see what kind of financing you can get. If you leased, you'd be stuck with $200-250 per/month lease payments. On a 5 year ticket, you can buy a car in the $10-12k range for that price easy. The main point there is that you'd own the asset when you're through. As long as you're a good mechanic and can maintain it.... :p

Specs:

Neon: 2588 lbs, 25MPG/36MPG (C/H), 132HP, 130ftlbs $13385us
Cavalier: 2617lbs, 25/33 (C/H), 140HP, 150ftlbs $14595us

They are close enough, that I'd go with whatever one had the better options in that pricerange. I haven't driven either of the new version of these vehicles so that would really be a huge factor.

The NEON has a slightly better crash rating FWIW. I have a 97 Neon and have had a few minor problems and the headgasket did need to be replaced under warranty, but, they used the new MLS(?) one that's supposed to last a lot longer. The new gens have that standard.

Keep in mind that a coupe may look sportier, but, the sedan is much more convenient for lugging friends (and eventually kids) around. That may be a pro or a con depending on your age group and how many of your friends/coworkers have cars. ;)

At that price range you could go with a entry pickemup truck. Ford Ranger, S10, etc. Just to throw a curve.

buy a Neon, and you are guaranteed severe head gasget leaks, and replacing the gasget- only about an $800 job- a KNOWN problem with them ( probably a 2.0l engine).
Not the new Neons, that was only a problem with the original Neons.

ZV is right.. I know guys who are hard on their cars and have new HG's every 40K on 95 Neons, mine has been 70K so far and no evidence of any problem with the HG.

My wife has a 98 Neon, and we spent about 650 on replacing the gasget before it even had 40K miles. It is also a very uncomfortable car, but I'm guessing the newer ones are better. My mom also leased a Cavalier about 3 years ago, and after a year she had it in the shop at least every three months with minor problems. All she does is drive it about 10-15 miles a day. I think the my wife's Neon gets better milage though.
