Neo (Xbox Challenge?)

I read that today too.

unfortunately, I was unable to find details in the NEO forums...

I put in a post asking for directions to info..... (maybe you can help me. I want to know what it is)

(I did find it extremely odd that NEO would have the d/l available but no (easily found) info on what it does.....
edit: Mike did put up a post explaining the project... he's trying to be above board.... (found it soon after I first made this posting)

heh, its on the new client only... and is an option. dont crunch for the xbox challenge
The new client isn't even required until february.

I'm crunching for the XBOX Challenge. I have 5 machines setup. Only 3 register.. and it takes forever to get a work unit done.. does one work unit contain more than one packet? Sorry, I'm new to this project.

They are setting up seperate stats for the Xbox Challenge so I think it is an apples to oranges type comparison to the old RSA-576 WU's.

When someone asked if the Xbox challenge was illegal, Mike posted this response:

I was wondering that myself... anyone want to 'donate' some legal advice?

FYI= We have successfully added the XBOX public key in the Client, version version 1.0.600. Just waiting for everyones advice...

Thanks,
Mike

Not that reassuring to me. I know you can still choose to run just RSA-576, but I'm going to try a different DC project for now, IMHO.

This doesn't sound really legal to me; also, since I don't have an X-Box, I don't specifically care about cracking it to run Linux. If I had one, it would be playing games anyway.

I plan to wait a bit while continuing to crunch for the RSA-576 project and see what becomes of this. If Neo gets into legal trouble, I will put all my power back on Folding@Home. 🙁

<-- Doesn't want to get sued.

I doubt MS would go after the ppl crunching those units. That'd be too much work for them and not very profitable.

I'm crunching this because signed homebrew code would be very cool. Being able to run alternative dashboards and use utilities such as XBOX Media Player without a modchip is also pretty convenient. Although, the key can obviously be used to sign illegal backups as well. Oh well, not like the modchip is any more difficult to install with the new LPC mods, and even the Matrix that doesn't require any soldering.

Anyway, I'm just wondering why my units go so slow and ppl with a 600mhz computer are outcrunching my 5 machines (P4 1.7, 2x AMD XP 1600, 2x AMD XP 1800).

< I have the client set to 100% BTW >

From the Neo web site;

"Everything done on this project is for the sole purpose of writing interoperable software under Sect. 1201 (f) Reverse Engineering exception of the DMCA. "

I doubt too that MS would go after the little people crunching for Neo, but its not out of the realm of possiblities. Opening up the programming of Xbox is obviously something they didn't want done or they wouldn't have put the encryption protection in the Xbox in the first place.

The way I see it, this means that for the first time Team AnandTech would be crunching on a project without full permission of all involved. Legal or not, is that ethical?

According to this thread, Randy48, the leader of ExtremeDC, and others will soon be pulling out of Neo so as not to be associated with the Xbox cracking in any way.

All of the above, IMHO, YMMV, and all that.

Wasn't (or Isn't) there a project similar to this trying to hack into TIVO?

Didn't get a 'warm & fuzzy' with that either.

AT Mods... sure would like to hear you weigh in on this one

Because of the questionable legality of this project, I said before that I didn't think this was something AT should be promoting and I still belive that.

Just because Microsoft isn't likely to go after the individuals involved in this project, that doesn't make it okay to do.

I punched out because of the slow connections anyway. Ever since day one I haven't had good luck in the project. A sign? Maybe... 😉

I don't think MS will come after them. To crack it in the year, the numbers worked out like this. Basically, it is not a realistic goal to crack in a year. From those numbers, you can see that it is not feasible to crack in any reasonable about of time (excluding incredible luck 😉).

I think that the XBOX challenge is too stupid. I changed over to the RSA-576 challenge today and the packets are going much faster.

Is anyone else getting a "HTTP 403.6 - Forbidden: IP address rejected" error when trying to get to www.theneoproject.com" ?

I get the same error message. 🙁

From what I understand the site will be down til they can remove all the xbox stuff from it. Maybe tomorrow it will be back. 🙂

Site is back up 🙂

quote from the forum:
"Due to legal reasons, we will no longer be hosting or participating in the xbox challenge.

We will not be answering questions or commenting anymore on this subject.

The Neo Project"

Guess the Xbox crap is gone for good 🙂 now lets hope they open up the data servers so I can dump these 9000+ units:|
