I don't quite get what's the big deal about him.

S. Africa is still a shitty place to live.

Yes, non-violence works now that we have global media, but...eh.

Also, people who say that Mandela's rule increased GDP are kind of full of it, aren't they? The sanctions in place guaranteed that S. Africa would have shitty GDP until they were lifted.

I get why people like him and Ghandhi and MLK are deified. Namely, the powers that be do want change to be non-violent (and I do, too), but the problems are still in place and I don't see S. Africa being a place someone would want to emigrate to happening anytime soon.

I will simplify it, the place would be far worse without the changes he fought for.
 
high rank people have passed away through my eyes, but Mandela, even though i am not educated about all his political life, hit me the most. I realize now, good people in high rank are now a gem. One of the saddest feeling. Also probably I grew up hearing his name during my youth and growing up in school.
