Neighbor's dogs bark off and on all day... weekdays

When I have a mind to knock on his door, that's when I'll do it. That's me, for sure!!! And I'll likely be angry and barely suppress the anger. I'll just give him a real piece of my mind. However, violence will never cross my mind. I know this world too well for that. The exchange will be verbal, and it will likely be short.

You could try to get a passive IR detector as well. i have seen cheap ones that come with a connection for a lamp and a timer and a daylight detector.
And are suited for outdoor use.
Instead of a lamp you could connect a wall adapter that powers the ultra sonic repelling the device. And it might help to cover up the daylight connector.

Something similar as this one i bought long ago.

If you do get an passive ir detector with relay out, make sure you also have a sort of main switch inside near your door to disable the power. Otherwise, people with dogs you do want to have around are not going to be happy with you. And make sure you an ultra sonic generator with over a 100dB sound level.

Not sure this could work here. The reason is that the lawn in question is these dimensions: 6.5' x 20'.

The short dimension starts at the sidewalk where people walk by constantly during the day, sometimes with their dogs. The dog in question, the tiny pekinese, always seems to crap about 4.5' from the sidewalk, at the corner near my walkway. So, any system that picks up this dog will probably pick up other passersby. At least I know where to look for it's doo doo. I saw some this morning. Since it's been raining, I won't touch it. After it sits there a while (when not raining, which is almost the whole year here what with this drought), it dries and is easily disposed of with a plastic mitt. Eh, the lady's not listened to me, but I'll talk to her if I catch them at it again.

It's the barker that's the real problem here, though. Right now, it's Sunday, the owner likely home, the weather rainy, the dog's likely inside, I haven't heard it particularly at all today, if at all. The owner's on notice, I think we have to give him another week or two to respond to the city's warning before any next move. Maybe he'll do something, who knows?

So are you saying its okay if the dogs is not on the leash and wander in your yard to poop?

Pick the poop up and throw it onto their drive way, they should get the message. If it's dry, add a little water so it makes more of a mess.

Good news!

Yesterday, heard some barking very early (i.e. 8AM, somewhere around there), but after that, there was nothing, conspicuous lack of barking. I actually began to wonder if the owner had gotten rid of the dog. That just doesn't happen nowadays during the week.

Late in the afternoon (still no barking!), I depart for my workout on my rollerskates (quads), am passing the guy's house and that of his next door neighbor, the woman I've been talking to as noted in past posts here, and I see the woman and she hails me, I skate up and ask her what's going on. She has her ~1.5 year old boy in her arms and is smiling widely.

She says the guy bought a different collar for the dog, a more effective one and put it on that day. When the dog barks (she could see the dog, their house is right next to the one with the barking dog), she could see it recoiling from the shock it was getting from the collar. The dog had pretty promptly shut up! I haven't heard a single bark today and it's 10:35AM.

So, the question is, I suppose, will that collar stay on and will the owner make sure that it has charged batteries in it?! He got that letter from the city, I'm sure. If he goes slack again and just ignores the problem several neighbors (including myself) will march down to city hall and sign the petition that gets him cited.

This dog, she thinks, is probably not much more than 2 years old. Maybe it's young enough to learn not to bark. Anyway, I guess if that working collar stays on its neck it won't bark.

He should still learn to treat his dogs right. As I said, I don't think he exercises them, which is not the way to treat a labrador (the barking dog is a black lab).

The only time I knocked on his door was when I needed his signature on a petition to allow me to make a minor change in my house. That was several years ago. That's how I knew his name.

I talked to him over his fence several times about the smell from the hundreds of dog craps in his yard. He finally kind of took care of that, but there's still a bunch back there, mostly dried.

I did say something to him about the barking dog, he was outside the back door of his house, I was up on my garage roof. He pretended not to hear me, that was about 5 months ago.

So, no, I haven't knocked on his door about the dog barking problem. However, talking to his next door neighbor has catalyzed a response, she called the city, the city came out, they sent him a letter, I called the city (that's how I found out they came out). She's talked to him several times, he's on notice, he got the dog a better collar. Bingo! Today, it's 12:05PM, I haven't heard a single bark. Finger's crossed. Really, that guy was guilty of inflicting psychological torture on his neighbors. If I have to I'll talk to him, but if I can successfully ignore him, I will.

I think it's called felony animal cruelty, heard that term on TV news a few weeks ago.

I won't lie, enduring that barking made me contemplate doing things I figure weren't legal, especially after my bedtime. But the only thing I did besides making friends with his next door neighbor and plotting a strategy, sort of, was to hang a device from a tree in my back yard that responds to barking with a high pitched tone. I had that out there for maybe a week. Don't know if it had any effect. I think the dog barked mainly when in front of his house, and that device, I think, would have had no effect when the dog was out front. There's a church across the street from that guy, and the dog would perch on his front porch and could see over the fence to the church parking lot, where ~homeless people would congregate frequently during the day, I presume waiting for food handouts. The dog barked at them, also people who would walk by on the sidewalk.

Not good news...

Yesterday, I leave for an afternoon of errands, return later in the afternoon. It had been over 24 hours since I'd heard anything from the problem black lab. But now, around 5PM, I hear whimpering, squealing, what sounds to me like a young dog in pain. I've heard that kind of noise from dogs in the past, but not recently. I heard no barking, but every 30 seconds to a minute, I'd hear squealing, suffering of a dog.

Around an hour later, it was worse. The dog would give a feeble half-hearted bark, followed by more whimpering, every minute or so. My interpretation is that in all probability all the shocks from the dog's new shock-collar had resulted in a persistent painful condition (i.e. injury). Of course, I could not see the dog. I presume that the owner had not yet returned home. Maybe the dog was missing its owner, being late in the afternoon, but I think it was suffering physically, based on what I was hearing. I have not a lot of confidence in the dog's owner that he will know how to deal with the situation, however I think he finally came home around 7PM because the sounds stopped.

It's now Saturday morning, I presume the owner will be home for most of the weekend. What will happen come Monday, I can't guess. Maybe the collar was too tight. Maybe the collar has a control to tone down the intensity of the shocks.

I think the dog was already a very disturbed animal, probably little able to adapt. Now, with this collar it's beside itself, or was yesterday.

I contemplated yesterday contacting the Humane Society, or perhaps Animal Services, the city agency that's been brought into this. However, that was Friday evening, I think they wouldn't have folks I could talk to. I suppose the people living next door, who are a lot closer than me would have a better view to what's going on. I could email them.

Another possibility: What may have happened is the dog learned the trigger point of the bark collar and is now vocalizing just below that threshold.
