Neighbor's dog killed our cat

You're a fucking moron. Yes, chain up the god damned dog if the owner doesn't have a fenced yard. People's pets should not be roaming, period. You'd probably be tearing the owner a new asshole if this dog attacked a person or got hit by a truck.

I own both dogs and cats, the dogs only go outside unsupervised in the back yard with an 8ft privacy fence. The cats never go outside.

I also don't have a problem with cats killing birds and squirrels. Birds are disgusting animals and squirrels are just rodents.

Feral (and OUTDOOR cats) often kill rare and or protected species of birds which sucks on two levels, first birds eat bugs, lot's of em without birds the insect population would explode, second, some birds are on the verge of extinction due to habitat destruction and cats. OP, sorry about the loss, feral or not you were attached to this animal and it sucks to have it killed like that, I hate asshole dog owners who are in their front yard with their dog unleashed, I'm walking my dog (on a leash) when they run out after us, usually with the owner screaming at it to STOP!, COME! which EVERY dog ignores and confrontation ensues. Unless your dog is inside a fenced in area it has NO business being off a leash whatsoever..

I'm sorry to say it, I love cats, but who are we to decide which animal should be locked up?

If we're to argue the dog must be, why not the cat? They can eat the neighbor's smaller animals as well. I know I'd be heartbroken, and really pissed off at the owner, but I'm having trouble thinking this isn't the natural end for stray cats.

We cannot keep them safe when they're outside.

Cats eat more bugs than birds ever will.

The dog didn't kill a domestic animal.

Ignore him, he's an idiot who thinks he knows the law better than everyone else.

Based on the fact the cat was a feral, the only offense the dog owner could receive would be for having the dog off-leash in a public space.

Sucks, OP. Sorry to hear it.

The dog needs to be put down. Or for the bleeding hearts who don't think killing a dog is the right thing, then the owner needs to be put down instead of the dog. The thing is a habitual killer, it's dangerous and the owner refuses to do anything about it. OP, you need to contact animal control about the incident.

Why? Dangerous against cats but not humans? What a bunch of morons in this thread.

The dog in my avatar has killed mice before. He's a habitual killer and should be put down!!!!!

I bet the feral cat has killed also. So, maybe the dog was doing everyone a favor.

Quoted for hypocrisy.

Yep, you sure are.

Try to get this through your head Zippy. The dog was known to be dangerous, was not properly restrained by his owner, escaped, went onto another persons property and killed a pet. What part of that escapes you? The fact that the cat was once feral does not change things. It had been adopted, spayed and cared for, that makes it a pet. And the dog killed it. If you can point to a PET that the feral cat killed we can talk about it, until then you're just an idiot.

Outside of cats, the dog was not dangerous and if you can provide proof that the dog has killed before, please present it. And please find the law where the dog would be euthanized on a first offense for killing a feral or pet cat. Again, moron.

stray/feral cats are a problem. IMHO this dog did the whole neighborhood a favor. the OP should not be feeding these strays. If OP wants to help they will spay/neuter them or at least not feed them. even if spayed/neutered, they aren't a domestic pet. How many other animals (birds, mice, moles, voles, etc) did this cat kill and noone cared about?

this doesn't excuse the fact the dog owner should have his dog under control, but this dog killed a random wild animal, not someone's long time pet.

*Exaggerating a little* I would have asked for compensation the dog itself, then euthanatized that cat killer.*Exaggerating a little*

Seriously, he could at least use the money he offered you to buy a muzzle that his dog would wear every time it's outside, so it could not do this again.

The OP should file a complaint with animal control, so that it's on record and hopefully after animal control finishes talking to him, he'll make sure that his dog is not able to roam free.

how come cats don't have to be on a leash but dogs do?

I'm guessing it has to do with their nature and size. Cats are not pack animals and cannot kill humans of any size. Dogs can be aggressive, especially certain breeds like Pit bulls and Rottweilers. If I ever saw a large dog roaming my neighborhood I would call animal control ASAP. If I saw a cat I would hardly notice, it can't hurt my kids or myself.

I have a lab, but he never roams around, and would not attack anything. My cat is too scared to go outside.

OP should be happy he has one less stray to feed. and hope the dog comes around to take care of more of the neighborhood's pests

Cats DO eat bugs, but not nearly as many as birds do.

Last time I watched a show on this on Discovery I think, they stated that cats eat more bugs in the world than any other mammal or bird. Wish I could remember the show I saw the claim made on. That's my reference for where I pulled that claim from though.

That is about as ridiculous as it gets, a bird can fly and catch a bug in mid-air and do it all day long, it's a primary part of their diet.

birds kill bugs as a diet. They also only eat a few bugs as they are small animals per day.

Cats, especially wild cats, kill bugs just to kill them. Many times they eat, but a lot is just practice and fun for them. They kill far more bugs than birds do as not all birds eat bugs but all house sized cats do.

I hate people who feed feral cats. They piss all over the place, kill the birds, lizards and frogs. And make all sorts of crap noises when they are fighting and humping each other. If you adopt a cat, keep it inside. Yeah the dog should be put to sleep too.

Whether or not a person feeds a stray cat doesn't stop that stray cat from behaving in the way you dislike...

Also, if the intention of the person feeding the stray cat is to domesticate the cat more, as it seems the OP was doing, then it takes time to change the cat from what it used to be and correct their instinctual behavior.

Oh man, I feel for you on that. Our cat of 18 years died outside to a dog. Our yard at the time back up to a golf course so you can see through the fence. Well, our cat was chilling on the other side when the dog attacked and killed him 🙁. I still have images of the cat twitching in his end.

Yes, the dog did the neighborhood a favor by getting free, going into someone else's yard and killing an animal that you say has killed other animals...but you don't have proof of this.
