so neighbor recently got a car few weeks ago. the alarm has gone off a couple times at 11pm 12am 3am 4am so far. tried talking with them (college students) but their response was they couldn't afford to buy better alarm. i suggest they turn it off then, they asked if i was going to take responsibility for theft. they said it bothers them as much as me, but if it bugs me that much i should pay for a new alarm. i left at that point.

any good ideas on how to handle this? i'll be going over to other nearby neighbors houses to get their feelings about this and police to see if they can possibly do something (fine maybe?)

You should have asked them what good the alarm is if it's always going off and no one responds to it because it's constantly giving false alarms.
Duh.

If they refuse to be reasonable about it, I'd just call the cops.

First of all, its rediculous for them to even ask you to pay for a new alarm. Its their car and their liability. Their car shouldn't be disturbing you at 3am.

Secondly, if a wouldbe car theif knows that someone has a car with an alarm on a hare trigger, it makes it that much easier for them to steal. Its like the boy who cried wolf, its going to go off so often that they're going to stop caring about it if they haven't already. One day they'll hear it go on, the off, and then a car driving away.

Third, if it continually goes off, call the cops for a public disturbance call. If you get enough people, then you can file a report if they don't do anything about it.

So, where exactly is this loudmouth car located ... I need a new set of wheels. :D

Or you could go with the "brick from afar" tactic ... "Gee, I guess someone tried to break in ... good thing you had that alarm!"
