Neighbor raises stink over family's pet pig

An Erwin family is fighting to keep its pot-bellied pig after the town adopted an ordinance banning swine as pets, but a neighbor said he wants the animal out.

Stormy Suggs, 14, has raised Clover, a a Vietnamese pot-bellied pig, almost from the animal's birth.

"If I lose her, it's not only like losing a sister, it's like losing a part of me," Stormy said.

"Just like any dog, any cat, any animal that you might have ? any child you might have ? she's part of the family," Donald Suggs, Stormy's father, said of Clover.

Erwin joined Coats, Angier and Lillington last year in adopting Harnett County's ordinance pertaining to pets. The law says swine aren't allowed within 200 feet of a home inside town limits.

Suggs said Clover should be grandfathered in under the ordinance, saying the pig's health could suffer if the family is forced to move her.

"The stress will probably kill her," he said.

Last week, the town's Board of Commissioners decided to keep the ordinance intact.

"The bottom line is, we do have an ordinance. The ordinance was passed by the board in the spirit of keeping the best interests of the public in mind,? Erwin Town Manager Bryan Thompson said. "So far as a compromise without any amendments to the ordinance, there's not a whole lot of latitude."

Erwin and Harnett County officials and attorneys plan to meet in the next few days to discuss Clover's future.

"We want to look at what the possibilities are,? Assistant County Manager Tony Wilder said.

Thomas Johnson, who lives next to the Suggs family, said he intends to press officials to stick to the letter of the law.

"I?m going to take this thing legally as far as I have to. I?m not going to live in a hog pen,? Johnson said.

He said the smell from the pig is often unbearable.

"It gets into my house, and it affects my health. I can?t even go to sleep at night without worrying about a disease-laden mosquito,? he said. "The odor will literally burn the hair out of your nose almost."

The Suggs family faces no penalties until officials make a decision. If officials uphold the ordinance, the family could face daily fines for keeping Clover.

If their pot bellied pig stinks, then they are obviously doing something wrong. It shouldn't stink any more than a dog or a cat would if you're taking care of it properly.

They are actually substantially cleaner than both if taken care of.

North Carolina, king of BBQ, and somebody is keeping a pet pig. You know what to do. Oh yes, you know exactly what to do.

Swine flu paranoia. Get better air filters....if your trailer has central AC.

I like the way you think. 😀

We got new neighbors last spring...one of the few rental houses on the street.

One day, not long after they moved in, I was walking to the mailbox and saw movement in their yard.

The ugliest gawd-dammed dog I've ever seen...till I looked closer and saw that it was a pot-bellied pig...😀

The dammed thing WAS cleaner than most dogs and cats, but it squealed like something right out of Deliverance from time to time...

Well, nobody should have to live with the stench of farm animals unless they live in the country. Honestly, I'm siding with the neighbor.

As has been repeated in this thread, pot-bellied pigs are actually cleaner than cats or dogs. I think Sonny pegged it - pig flu paranoia.

In our apt complex here in MA they allow 1 pet, and someone owned a pot bellied pig. They used to walk it on a leash and used to poop-scoop it. When I used to BBQ I always invited them over and tried to entice the pig to get a bit too close to the grill.

My neighbor had a pot bellied pig... one day they came home and discovered that their fridge had been broken into and the 6 pack of bud drank... the pig was lying right next to the empty pack of brew 😀

People should have the right to have any pet they want as long as it's properly taken care of and poses no danger to anyone. In this case, it should probably be tested for swine flu just for a precaution and to reassure everyone there's no danger.

Well there's always that small chance that it mutates and transfers the way it did in Mexico, which they have not found out how yet (or did they?). I mean the odds are super slim, but just to shut up the neighbor's paranoia they could just have it tested anyway.

The swine flu has been blown out of proportion, that I know.

who gives a crap?

pigs are food not pets.

Why do you think they are raised in Vietnam? As pets? They're food. You eat them.

Now get that BBQ ready for Clover. I'm looking forward to some BBQ'd shoulder. Mmmmm.

but i doubt thats the case since it sounds like he loves the little piggy. they are kinda neat.

We had a dwarf potbelly pig. Best pet ever. He used a litter box like a cat, but was social like a dog. He loved taking baths too.
