Nehalem's official name: "Core i7"

According to Expreview:
"Nehalem to become Core i7 processor" (they've got pictures of logos too)

</facepalm>
Yes, I'm slightly bitter about wrongly guessing that they'd use "Core 3". I assumed they'd choose something semi-logical, instead of picking a random number out of a hat...

EDIT: That linky seems a little funky...it wanted to add an RSS feed. Try accessing it through the INQ if you're having trouble.
EDIT 2: Looks like they pulled the article. No matter, I took a screenshot.

Wow that really is odd. It seems like they are throwing away brand recognition to a point there (average joe wants intel's best, and of course, core3 has to be better than core 2 but what the heck is core i7) and just confusing the hell out of a lot of people. The chip is going to be amazing, but this is just, odd.

Core X4, was leaked to quite a few big OEMs. Unless it has changed in the last 3-4 days.

Supposedly the 4th generation of the Core marchitecture with 45nm being the third.

Seriously. So, any idea what your marketing folks were thinking, or what it means?

I thought Intel already had i786/80786 (used unofficially to refer to Netburst), so it can't be shorthand for that.
At least they didn't call it n7...now that would have been awkward...

Considering the large number of people here I thought would be educated enough to deduce Core 3 would mean the next generation of Core and not a triple core processor, but couldn't...I can understand why Intel chose something different.

The dual-core will be four threads...
Wouldn't X4 clash a little too much with what AMD has been doing?

Xtreview has a few more details. Says the official "unveiling" of the name will be on August 11th, so I guess we'll find out one way or another. They have a slightly different picture of the logos - it's got a die shot in the background and some marketspeak. ("Communication package??")

Kinda lame if you ask me...maybe Intel should consider a new marketing firm. They may as well have called it Intel Core Super Deluxors...oh well, I guess I'm still interested :roll:

I seriously have no idea what i7 means but I can guarantee that people will be confused as to whether Core 2 or Core i7 is better. Now I gotta retrain my parents and friends on how the whole naming scheme works.

This sure saves Apple a lot of marketing expenses.

Apple really needed to trademark 'iEverything'

Only that Samsung already has i7 digital camera range...

Maybe "i" is meant to represent sqrt(-1)!

I'm inclined to call shens until it's official, but marketing departments do continue to amaze me every day.

I don't like the name, it doesn't make sense. Kinda stupid actually 😕 I'm still wanting the cpu but I think I'll make up my own name for it.

Core3 QUAD... how can you mistake it for anything else? although they could be hoping that people confuse HT with having twice the cores... in which case there will be no "quad" designation.

Someone posted in the comments to the article:
386 = i1
486 = i2
P5 = i3
P6 = i4
Netburst = i5
Core = i6
Nehalem = i7

P6 = i4
Netburst = i5
Core = i6
Nehalem = i7

Which would make this:
286 = i0
186 = i(1)
8088 = i(2)
8086 = i(3)
4004 = i(4)

Or, what I'm guessing, is the chip has 7 math units.

Which it doesn't.....

I think i7 makes perfect sense. Not only could it theoreticaly be 786, but if they called it Core 3 people would think its a Phenom X3. Any even number woudl be wrong since then people would wonder why a Core 4 has 8 cores, etc. It's different and Apple-y. I like it. Now when can I buy it?

it has 4 physical cores. 8 with hyper threading.

4 physical + 4 virtual for a total of 8 threads possible.

Shens as well.

I'm inclined to think that the website with the logos is just looking for hits.
