I said go all the way to page 15 as read up to page 15... Page 10 to 14 are non-gaming benchmarks as well.

Well either way you already bought your stuff and it's hard to go back now.

Let's just hope TRIM works properly in RAID for you? RAID 0 is performance RAID right?

Where does it say that Sandy Bridge should be used with 1.5V RAM? I got some DDR3 RAM lying around and I believe they are 1.65V. I know generally speaking, a lot of people use 1.65V RAM as well with their Sandy Bridge builds.

So, the 980x hangs with SB in *most* single/lightly threaded benches and then is a definite step ahead when it comes to multithreaded benches?

For ~$250 I am not sure how he could have done "better"? A 3930k (best of both worlds?)?

Oh really? I have some old obsolete parts that I will unload for cheap. They meet your only rule, are you going to use them?
Sure, do you have any LGA1155 CPUs you want to unload? I'll give you $5.

It's $60 used, probably $150 new on Newegg. That's why I buy used. Your own Asus P6-T will be worth $60 eventually, and you built a computer on that.

I prefer let other people buy stuff brand new off Newegg, and then I pay them 50% or less of their purchase price and keep the difference.

My only rule is to pay the lowest price possible.

I use to be a computer tech that did repairs and service. I've seen far to many abused components for me to risk it. Granted I do buy certain things used but a motherboard is not one of them.

And yes the board i'm on will eventually be $60, however I bought it brand new for $300 and know that it hasn't been touched by anyone else and its been in service since oct 2009. It has more than made up for its original purchase price and serves me well now.

However i'm sure for you any many others this rule works :)

So you have other guidelines than just price? Sorry, I was just going by what you said, and that was only price matters ;)
I don't have any other guidelines, but unless you can furnish a SB CPU for $5, I think I'll find a better deal elsewhere.

Got my 980X for $375 and my mobo for $41 shipped. Way better deal than SNB. Especially since I do run a lot of multithreaded workloads in which the 980X stabs the 2700K in the face. OP made a solid choice.

Everybody has their "own set of rules." The rules correspond to trade-offs they are inclined to make -- the old micro-economic "indifference curves between quantities of items X and Y," and priorities about money, performance and luxury.

I saw some "deals" posted at a reseller recently, for brand-new P67 motherboards in or around that $60 price-range. Maybe a tad higher, but it showed the reseller's interest in getting rid of some new boards that weren't enabled for "full Sandy Bridge" features . . .

As for Makaveli's rule about inexpensive motherboards -- it depends on what you're trying to build. For family members who depend on my generosity for their computer needs, I've bought $85 mATX boards and even over-clocked them mildly. Stand-up, reliable machines! The fam-damn-ily doesn't complain!

wow 980x for $375 was it a family member lol :p

Got a question for you how much vcore do you need to run 4ghz on your chip?

Also someone mentioned to me that SB doesn't support VT-d I know Nehalem/gulftown does can anyone confirm this?

Great point for family I would go the cheaper route just not for my own stuff :p

However if I still lived at home with my parents I would think twice about it because guess who they will be coming to when stuff stops working!

But for light duty rigs you are spot on.

I'm still running my i7-930@4.0Ghz. I will likely keep it until haswell, or whatever AMD part is available at that time if somehow they perform a miracle and become competitive again.
here's a very rare bench of the new chips with a 920 oc at 4.0

http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/cpus/2011/11/14/intel-sandy-bridge-e-review/7

-but I'll move to ib\z77 being a mature platform with features I've been waiting for. if ib is NOT a dud with E1 stepping that is.
-I should be good for a while with ib\z77 for gaming.
-delaying the upgrade itch for a long time now and the x58 will be pasted down ,with smiles in return for it.

I remember reading this review but not about the power comsumption.

Pretty crazy that the 920 @ 4 Ghz pulls more power than the 990x and 3960X when all 3 are overclocked idling. I do think that maybe a c0 920 tho but still funny.

And SB-E fully loaded and overclocked pulls a ton of power almost as bad as Bulldozer but alteast you get the performance with it on the intel side.

Still lovin' my i7 920@4.2Ghz. If IB hits 5.0GHz on Air, I may have to spring for it. That and Lucid Virtu.

Still rocking an i5-750 I got a couple years ago with an MSI mobo combo for $200 at Fry's. Upgraded from 4gb mem to 16gb Patriot mem last year for $70 and looks like my PC should last another few years at least. Barely hit 30% usage on all cores. Other than the odd video encoding.

Lots of multitasking. Might start some VM usage pretty soon. Why I got the memory, besides the cheap cost. SSD also made a huge difference. I'll likely be waiting another couple gens before upgrading. Have it paired with a 6950 and can max out every game I play...BF3, SWTOR, EVE, CS etc...Had it flashed to 6970 bios but I can max out either way at 1080p. Run 2 24 inch monitors.

See no real need to upgrade yet since I barely utilize what I have now...unlike previous releases.

Went from 939 to Core 2 Celeron with overclock, to E8400, to this.

The best we have is the canadian version of newegg which sucks lol.

Canada computers has pretty much has the best pricing for most things in canada.

I dont feel at all underpowered with my i5-750. The only thing in my rig I feel like upgrading right now is my card, and before the AMD 7xxx series dropped, I didnt really have much reason to upgrade that either. Previous generation stuff is still rocking pretty hard.

I agree I think anyone sitting on Gen 1 i7 is still very happy with the performance they are getting 3 years later. I'm 2 1/2 years into my build and I can see it lasting 4 years which would be a first for me.

Pretty much just GPU upgrades will be neccessary.

With SB you are looking at about a 15% ipc boost ivy will add another 5-8%.

So i'm really waiting to see what haswell brings to the table if the IP increase adds up to almost 40-50% over my current setup then I will most likely jump.

Actually bought it on these forums! Really nice guy who is known for giving people awesome deals on his old gear. I got the mobo from eBay though.

1.27V to get 4GHz. I haven't really tried lower.

Very happy with my 920. C0 stepping, and it sucks at overclocking, but performance is great even 3 years after launch, and at 3GHz I can drop the voltage to less than 1V idle.

mmm been on a 990X @ 4.4ghz for ages now.

i honestly dont see myself upgrading anytime soon until haswell comes out with a 10c/20t.

:T

I have a 2600K which does 4.6ghz... yet i rarely touch that box.
Im just massively greedy when it comes to cores.

I find directcanada does.

then I pricematch it at NCIX for the same day shipping. :)

My opinion, I wouldn't have spent a dime if you had a 920. You honestly won't feel the difference unless Benchmarking, which sadly...is benchmarking. Would have saved you $450.00.

Continue.
