Negotiating room on a "high end" mattress?

I wanted to purchase a very nice matress set. After trying all of them I wound up going back to the 3000 dollar mattress. It really just felt that good.

This was the "on sale price, marked down from 5500". Jewlery store anyone?

I can't help but think this is similar to the furniture industry where there is a 3-400% markup. I didn't bother haggling because I wanted to shop around. This was a top of the line Simmons mattress, but no matter the name, it was perfect.

the question is, just how much room is there on mattresses? To me if the price is 3K, then an offer of 1.8K is a good start, with a hi of 2.2K. Or is that still way over?

A King size is generally comfortable for a threesome. ;)

I do require a king size.

But seriously..."Big Sale! 40-60% off!" sounds like a jewelry store which means there is a good amount of room left.

Oops, hit reply by accident.

I am in the market for a mattress myself, but being a student I'm looking to get one for a couple hundred.

However, if you think that your mattress is "perfect" I don't think you would mind paying a couple bucks more for it. However, I think that you may be able to get it for 2k. But hell, what do I know about these things?

I don't know. That's why I try to buy things at Costco because they only have max markup of 14% on any item with the average being around 9%. With Costco buying power, they get about the absolute lowest price possible from their supplier.

3k sounds lot for a mattress but I'm cheap and happy with my $600 mattress.

I recently got my $1,500 mattress down to $980, and I didn't even try that hard to haggle.

My hunch is that you could get them down to half price with a little negotiation.

I recently bought a new mattress, box springs, and bed frame. The trouble I found was that each mattress store has their own uniquely named mattresses from the same manufacturer. Two mattresses at two different stores can look and feel identical, but they will probably have different names and slightly different specs.

Because of this, I found it hard to negotiate between stores, because the salesman would point out that even though their competitor was selling mattress X for $Y, and they had something similar for more, they wouldn't pricematch because it wasn't technically the same mattress.

Eventually, I got one of the salesmen to knock an additional $100 off the already "sale" price by acting somewhat interested, but not quite ready to buy. I may have been able to secure a better price, but I had just moved to the area and needed a bed to sleep on, so I didn't have the luxury of time to keep walking out of the stores if I didn't feel like I was getting a good deal.

My mattress set only ended up costing about $950 after tax, and had "free" delivery. It's not as expensive as the one you were looking at, but I thought I'd just post my experience.

whatever you do, don't get a "no-flip" mattress! Wife and I got a Simmons Beautyrest NoFlipper and it's beginning to show it's sagging age and it's only 6 years old. We rotate it about once a month, but that doesn't really help. Wish we had shopped around some more...

I bought our mattress from one of those scratch and dent places. No problems with it whatsoever except a slight dirt spot on the mattress that easily cleans off and is covered up by a sheet anyway. It was supposedly around a $3,000 mattress that I picked up with box springs for 500. Its hella comfortable too.

NASTY NASTY NASTY. Haven't you ever seen those shows that detail what exactly is "in" USED mattresses. If you had, you wouldn't have had bought a used one.

If I cleaned it and put covers over it, whats the big deal? Its not dirty anymore, even if it was at one point. So someone bought it, had buyers remorse after using it for 3 days and returned it. Big deal. Pfft.

Some people need to spend a lot of money to feel like they're getting something that's good.

See: $1500 vacuums.

Our latest mattress was retialing for 1600 but was on sale for 1200. We asked what the best price was and got it for 1000 with "free" delivery, frame, and box springs.

I personally buy a cheaper box spring and mattress and then buy a good 3-4inch mattress pad to put on it. It's much cheaper and you can pick a mattress pad to either soften or harden the feel of the bed.

Like I said, if you watched those investigative reports, you would think totally different. They ripped them open and showed fun things like fungus, bacteria, molds. You can also think of other fun fluids that seeped in and then dried out. You know those "special" fluids or even simple things like sweat, etc. It doesn't matter if you cleaned it off, etc. It has seeped in and dried into the interior of the mattress.

So unless you can throw the whole thing in the washer and dry it out later, you're still sleeping with any number of these things.

In addition, things bought at those shops are most likely NOT just 3day used items. Most likely a longer time frame.

in my experience, the way around this is to be vague on what the mattress at the other store is and just say that it feels exactly the same. whether or not it's technically the same mattress doesn't really matter for purposes of justification if you view them as the same.

I don't understand the whole "high end mattress"game. I spent like $349 on a Sultan Hamno mattress from Ikea (mattress-only on platform--no boxspring) and combined it with a $100 memory foam topper and it is the best sleep I've ever had. I've slept at 6-star hotels that spend thousands on research, and my combo is better than anything I've had there. Maybe its all personal preference and stuff, but spending $1000+ on a mattress is stupid.

Spidey07: I'm not sure you need to spend $3k to sleep comfortably... 99.9% of the world does it on something cheaper and so you might want to reconsider that.

These salesman must have excellent poker faces because I can just imagine them being ready to laugh when someone wants to buy a $3k mattress, or when they say one feels better than the other, but they really know that it's very much the same thing but they put different pillows or something on the bed :p
