Negotiating a salary... *update*

they basically offer 60k and i ask for 70k and they say they would have to get back to me in a week or two...

the thing is i want ot leave my current job asap (2 week notice of course) as i'm on the brink of getting bombarded with projects

would you guys wait it out or just bite the bullet and take the initial offer?

update, got close to 70. i dont wanna be specific . took it.
 
It's possible they felt you were a good choice at 60k but at 70k they may want to see if their second or third choice will take 60k.
If you think you're worth 70k then wait and see.

crap i didnt think of that

i really want to work for this company as it has outstanding benefits and a great work environment based on what i've heard from friends but money is always important and i hate to negotiate for a raise.

however i have a good hunch i'm the first and only one they've interviewed so far... i hope!
 
2 weeks seems like a long time to consider a counter-offer. And a 17% is a big difference for a counter-offer. Hope you didn't counter-offer yourself out of a job.

2 years doing database reporting/analysis, 1 year doing web development (backend/frontend, mainly perl)
making close to 60 at current job
new position is in java for a large corporation(no prof experience)
pasadena, ca area
 
Damn dude, there's going to be some hot-shot kid right out of college that's going to jump all over that 60k.

Frankly, I'd laugh my butt off if they counter-offered your counter-offer with 55k. 😛

That's not an entirely unreasonable jump for switching jobs, but the lack of professional Java experience is a negative. For $70k, I'd want someone who is good to go. 😉

a counter-offer is fine. but he asked for way to much considering his experiance. but heck sometimes that works.
 
I would have asked for 63k and not more... They offered you 60k assuming you would counter with something, but not 10k more.

In my current position, they offered me $xx/year, and when I asked about negotiating the HR guy pretty much told me in so many words that it would have to go through the entire approval process and could take up to 14 days... I, like you, wanted desperately to leave my current job at the time, so I accepted the 70k and negotiated a few extra vacation days during my first year that was going to be pro rated for vacation and personal days.
 
He can get $70k easy. He is under market.

If a company is going to take so long for someone they want and offers a salary from $60k vs $70k, you might want to consider if it's worth working for that company. $10k should not phase a company you want to work for. But then again you said "large company" that has a bureaucracy and has to go through 10 people before you get a job requisition approved...YGPM, I have a $70k job for you.
 
My personal rule is to not bother asking for more than 10% over what they quote. Most employers are willing to accept such a margin to get their first choice candidate, but much more and the next-best starts looking mighty nice, especially since they can probably quote him a lower figure and pay him your i.o. or less. if the salary seems decent, sometimes its better to fight for a slightly better benefits package, such as priority for scheduling(inc. vacation), hours selection(i.e. 9-5 instead of 8-4), pay my co-pays, etc.

As someone stated earlier... that's just enough time for them to interview a few people who are just as capable, but might be willing to take less. Competition is rough, man. You're only worth what someone else with similar skills is willing to take for the job.

Compare the 60K to your current salary. Is it worth an extra 10K more, on the chance that they might say "No thanks, we've found someone else," keeping you stuck at your old job? If it were truly a great work environment, and 60K + outstanding benefits was more than what you were making, I probably would have accepted. You honesty could have negotiated your way out of a job. Only time will tell, now.

Stalling means, they get more time from you at your present rate. It's an old and honored concept. Did they also tell you they would take your request under advisement?

And, a final thought; Most of us think and feel like we are more valuable than our employers do. All in all, you're just another brick in the wall. 😉
