I agree with the scum comment. I really wished that you could buy direct from the manufacturer and bypass all those lying scumbags.

I recently got a new car, and they tried to scam me. I knew too much about the car for it to work. I almost made the salesman cry and got into a dick measuring contest with the General Manager. They were trying to scam me on so much sh-t. I just sat there laughing at them. I ended up buying the car from them anyway since we were halfway through signing the papers, and they lightened up on the bullsh-t...

I went in to look at used cars, told the guy what i was willing to pay a month. He came back with $80 over what i said i was willing to pay a month, and i said no. I held my ground as he came back closer and closer to my number.

I walked out paying $5 less than my number. :)

Never tell them what you're willing to pay.
Never tell them you have a trade untill the last minute.
Never tell them you'll settle for something.
Never tell them you want to buy now.
Never tell them you need to finance.

There's probably more I'm forgetting...

the last two cars my family got were both leases (no flames, great deals) and were both the advertised specials.....
we were patient and weren't really picky when it came to the cars.

Why would you not tell them at the last minute you have a trade? That is the best time!

Well I got the car for more than $3,000 under blue book value. With my credit and very little down with no trade in, i was happy.

^^^^ That's horrible advice. Just adds time to the whole transaction. If you wanna create a 6 hour slugfest at the dealership then bitch about it to everyone then do just that. I sold cars for two years and if you think the salesmen are the only ones bullshitting your wrong, people lie to the saleslmen non stop. I was actually trying to do it as clean and honest as you can, but people are so hardened and they bs so much you CAN NOT help them honestly most the time.

My advice to you is barring a trade in, the best way to get the lowest price on a car, or a lease payment, is to get on the phone, know the exact car and options you want, and call a few local dealers and ask for their best number. Only way they can get you in is to hit you low, they will not start out with a large profit number. I would agree to a few hundred over invoice on the phone anytime just to bring someone in and maybe sell a car when I had nothing working.

I ended up getting out of that business for good just because of the way that both sides have evolved...not to mention people think they can finance everything these days and just can't imagine why the bank would want some freaking down payment when they are upside down, trading, and financing taxes and everything else.

I don't know man, the bullsh-t is real thick here in NY. Most dealers don't have acres and acres of cars. They try and give you what they have. If you got a trade-in, they bump up the price. Same with financing. If you tell the guy you're willing to settle, you're stuck with the POS they have in the back. They tried to sell me a car with no leather and moonroof even though I specifically said I wanted them...

You wait until the last moment because otherwise the salesman tries to fudge the numbers in their favor.

BTW.. I paid MSRP. I had to because it was (is) such a hot car and I was just lucky not to run into a dealer that was marking up the car.

The salesman is making a commission based on a percentage of $400, but the "house" is probably making something on the holdback, unless the car has sat around so long that the interest paid by the dealer excedes the holdback (dealers usually don't own the cars on the lot, the dealer's bank does).

Because of the money that car dealerships pay in interest when a car sits on their lot for too long, isn't it technically true that they make more money off of you when you special-order a vehicle?

If its a used car or something you're looking at, have a friend call in and offer a price lower than yours. Go to the salesman next day and say your price again.

Yeah, I'm sure in NY it is probably the thickest bs around, but you just have to try and be firm, if they are putting you on a vehicle you don't want at all then say that you will absolutely not buy that vehicle. Their job is to sell cars, not order custom ones for you, so they have to give it a shot and switch you when they don't have the exact unit...

I was very firm. In the end, they had to get my car from another dealer and do a swap. I wasn't happy about the 50 miles they put on it either...

Don't walk into a dealer with the intention of making a deal and driving a new car home
Never work your way down from MSRP (unless you know invoice and wanna do the math)
Know the invoice price of the car AND any options
Know the dealer incentives if any
Know what others are paying over (or under) invoice. Message boards are GREAT for this!
Get dealers into a bidding war for your business via email or fax. Try to avoid going into the dealership until you've got written approval on a deal

There are several websites you can get this info from. I prefer Edmunds.com

I was a dealer trade driver for awhile. I took pretty good care of the cars if they were going straight to a customer. It might comfort you to know that most of the drivers that dealers employ are retirees just looking to supplement their SSI.
