Needs some Audio Video Sync Help

I'm having an issue where the sound coming out of my receiver (Sony STR-DE695) is slightly out of sync with the video.


I've been upgrading my home theater over the holidays and have added the following equipment:

Replaced:
32in Sony KV-32XBR450 CRT (1080i) with 52in Sony KDL-52XBR6 LCD (1080p)
DirecTV HR10-250 HD TIVO with DirecTV HR-22 HD DVR (some would say this is not an upgrade)

Added:
PS3

The issue is with the PS3 and satellite feeds.

My old TV only accepted component inputs, so I had the PS3 and DVR feeding the receiver with component and optical audio cables, and the receiver feeding the TV with component. had no problems doing it that way

Now I have HDMI running from the PS3 and DVR to the TV and optical cables from each box feeding the receiver. The receiver DOES NOT accept HDMI so it only supports DTS and Dolby Digital.

I have the PS3 set to bitstream audio over the optical out.

If I pump sound through the TV and receiver at the same time you can hear them out of phase with the HDMI audio through the TV being correct.

Anyone know how to set it up so I can the audio fixed?

The TV does have an optical out so maybe I should let the TV feed the receiver?

 
Sounds like your TV is applying processing to the HDMI video. When it's getting both audio and video through the HDMI, it can keep them synchronized, but, obviously, your receiver isn't going to have a clue. If your TV has it, set the HDMI input to "game mode" or whatever to disable the extra processing.

A quick search turned up similar issues all over the place. Is your problem that the sound from the speakers hooked to the a/v is out of synch with the video? E.G. lip synch is off and/or you see something happen then the sound follows instead of being simultaneous?

I browsed through your a/v pdf manual and didn't see a speaker or audio delay function anywhere, that would allow you to adjust to try to correct audio synch issues like what was mentioned, if that is the issue you are experiencing.





 
Also, If your receiver has settings for distance of the speakers, you can play with that to match the sound the TV is putting out. Kinda hit or miss, but it does help.

Dapunisher - I tried searching the forums but came up with nothing. Probably didn't use the right search terms.

You nailed the problem I'm having. I couldn't find an audio delay either for the receiver either.

Although it will allow me to set the speaker distances, like was mentioned above.

I'll try the game mode first to see if it's video processing issue.

Next I'll try the speaker distances.

If that doesn't work I'm going to try running an optical audio out from the TV.

Well I tried game mode & no joy.

The same with playing with the speaker distances.

However running an optical audio cable from the TV to the receiver & HDMI from the boxes to the TV did work. The TV seems to add the appropriate delay.

Guess I should upgrade my receiver soon.

Glad to hear you got it sorted out. My bad on the ambiguous search statement, I should have said I did a google search on the issue. BTW, I am due for a a/v upgrade myself, my old Onkyo HT-R500 is floundering with new Blu-ray movies and games, some force me to choose a PLII or other DSP mode instead of playing in DD or DTS. 🙁
