Needing CPU thermal paste

Haven't had to ask this in a while but I recently tried getting a Xeon L5639 to work with my motherboard and after all that I need to revert back to my 920. I am out of paste, what is the latest and greatest these days?

They're all about the same, as shown by numerous comparison tests that have included toothpaste, Nutella, and Vegamite.

I was hoping to get responses before I made it to Micro Center. The salesman sold me ICD7. This stuff is way too thick. Doesn't even spread. Now I'm stuck with 2 tubes of this stuff, I hope Micro Center is open tomorrow so I can return the one. I should of just gotten AS5, but thanks fellas 🙂

If you're trying to spread it, you're doing it wrong. You should apply a couple of lines down the CPU and then allow the pressure of the HSF mounting to spread it out. Fewer air bubbles that way.

When I took off the heat-sink the paste appeared to have spread evenly. Either way I'm about to apply AS5 now. But that might of been a possibility.

I have a thermal paste based question.... What would be a good paste to use on my gtx 570's..... They are a few years old and probably could use some new paste.. m@

I haven't put any paste on a video card since my old 6600GT, but I just used the same Arctic Silver 5 that I use on my CPU.

When applied correctly they're all pretty much within a few degrees.

Arctic Silver has a habit of crapping out sooner than other pastes and has some of the weaker thermal conductivity compared to other pastes. Considering the negligible price difference there are definitely much better options out there these days. It still works fine, there's just no real reason to use it over all of the other options aside from "I still have half a tube from years ago."
