My parents are looking to buy me a computer for college as a birthday gift. I have already asked if I could just have some money so I can build my own, but they said they wouldn't. So, I'm currently looking at a Gateway system, since I'm the AT gateway zelot 😀 Here's what I have in mind, so far:
Processor ---------- Intel® Pentium® 4 Processor 2.0GHz
Memory ------------- 256MB DDR SDRAM (I'll upgrade to 512mb, because gateway wants $160 for 256mb ram
)
Hard Drive --------- 40GB UATA100 7200RPM Hard Drive
Floppy Drive ------- 3.5" 1.44MB diskette drive
CD-ROM or DVD ------ 16x/48x DVD-ROM Drive and 40x/12x/48x CDRW
Case --------------- NEW Gateway Mid-Tower Case
Operating System --- Microsoft® Windows® XP Home Edition
Monitor ------------ 18" LCD Flat Panel Display Analog/Digital (18.1" viewable)
Video -------------- 128MB NVIDIA? GeForce4 Ti-4200G with TV Out and DVI Graphics Accelerator
Keyboard ----------- Multi-function Keyboard
Mouse -------------- Logitech USB Optical Wheel Mouse and Gateway mouse pad
Sound System ------- SoundBlaster Audigy Audio w/ IEEE 1394 (FireWire) and Pinnacle Express
Speakers: ---------- (My own Boston Acoustics BA7400 set)
Expansion Slots ---- 3 PCI and 1 AGP
External Ports ----- (6) USB (2 in front and 4 in back are version 2.0) Parallel, Serial and (2) PS/2
Controller --------- Integrated Ultra ATA Controller
Modem -------------- 56K PCI Voice Modem
Network Adapter ---- Integrated 10/100 Ethernet
Warranty Program --- 1 Year Limited Parts / Labor / Support

Total: $1639
The system comes standard with a 17" LCD, but it's only got analog input. So, for $100 more, I upgraded it to the 18" LCD with DVI. Here are the specs on the LCD: http://support.gateway.com/s/MONITOR/7003481/700348103.shtml . They aren't that great, but when I looked at one at my local Gateway COuntry Store, it's didn't look that bad, colors were good, and I didn't see any ghosting when playing the latest Star Wars game.
So, what do you guys think?
