I live in a small town where unemployment is high. I've been unemployed for quite a while and I finally got an interview for a tech position. I know how to handle interviews and generally come off well. But I know that they are interviewing several other people who are equally qualified and strong. I really need this job and I'm interested in any suggestions on anything I might do to give myself an edge.
Thanks.
Wear a suit to the interview with a sharp haircut. Bring enough resumes for each person that may be present. During the interview, sound as enthuisastic about the position as possible (without being abnoxious or fake). Look each person directly in the eye while talking. Don't fidgit - stay calm, relaxed, but be excited! If you are as equally qualified as the other candidates (in experience and skills), your excitement for the position and the first impression you give them will be your only chance to differentiate yourself from the pack.
I recently went through this exact same senario for a database analyst position. It was down to me and one other guy. We both had equal skills and were "perfect candidates." They couldn't decide between us so I lost out due to seniority. I was bummed, but that's what was fair and I'm cool with that.
Best wishes!
