Need Windows XP Pro Help!

hey folks,
here's one for all you windows xp pro guru's... i just finished installing windows xp pro for the first time on a system i built from spare parts. is installed correctly, but freezes on the black screen with windows xp and the blue cursor scrolling across the bottom. it works fine when booting from safe mode. the system includes the following:

Epox 8KTA3
Thunderbird 1.4 (retail w/heatsink)
512MB PC133
WD 13 gig HD
geforce DDR
onboard sound
Smart n Friendly 4/2/24 cdrw

and that's it.

any help/suggetions are welcome, and let me know if ya need more info. thanks in advance!!!!
