Need Wii repair advice

One of my little nephews (hyper ah heck) was running around and tripped over my Wii a few weeks ago. Ever since then it doesn't read discs and just displays a "cannot read disc error".
I've looked into some repair tips online but most of it just seems like a throw parts at it and see kinda thing. Does any one know of some sort of repair service thats reputable out there? Or a better way of determining what exactly is wrong with the thing, i'm inclined to think the disc laser is out of whack but i'm not sure.

I'm in orange county, CA if it matters.

If it was me, I'd open it up and take a look. Might be something obvious and easy to fix. However, for someone who doesn't have experience with that kind of thing, or doesn't want to mess with it, I'd say sell it as broken on ebay, then put the money towards a new one.

Actually, what I'd do is mod it. Been awhile since I really looked into it, but I think you can actually run Wii ISOs off a USB hard drive.

Yeah, what has been said already. Check warranty and/or repair costs if out of warranty.

But it sounds like a mechanical problem with the disc drive, since it was knocked over. 99% sure of this.

hell they might even fix it for free (doubtfull but they will reduce the cost).

the "cannot read disc error" is a common problem with them. My 1st wii started doing that within a year and it didnt fall or anything.

I think they wanted to charge me $75 to fix it and i got them down to $25.

Some Wiis had trouble reading the dual layer games like Smash Bros Brawl. They offered free repairs for that.

I would send it to Nintendo, and have them repair it. Especially if you have any DLC, because you can not transfer that to a new Wii yourself. The repair should be around $80 and you get a 1 year warranty on the repaired/refurbished Wii you get back.

Nintendo is also pretty good with warranty service. When my Gamecube died, a long time ago, they sent me the replacement first and had me send the dead one back in the box of the replacement. It was free because of the 1 year warranty, which I believe the Wii also has. They probably don't do this anymore because they need to transfer over whatever is stored on the Wii.

They still do that, but you loose your DLC if you take that option.

My experience with Nintendo repair wasn't that great.

I had to send in my Wii 3 times to get repaired in 2008 (disc read errors). The first repair came back and they replaced the DVD drive, but the console was damaged (it looked like someone played hockey with it at the repair center). It was cracked, dirty, and actually had a screw hanging out of the bottom of the console. I called and they immediately wanted me to send it to CA instead of the NY repair center. I got a refurb unit back that time that didn't work at all (it powered on but the disc drive sounded like a buzz saw, and wouldn't read a game disc at all). So I called again and they offered to replace it will a brand new Wii instead of a refurbished/repaired one.

I guess I had bad luck, but they were always very friendly on the phone and apologized all the time for getting back "bad" systems.

Thanks guys, I'll just do that. All of my friends told me to just mod it to play pirated games but that wasn't what I wanted to hear. I have a launch console (got it on release day) so my warranty is long gone, ill give them a call and see what they can do for me.

sounds like the issues i had with them. 1st time it was "fixed" for maybe 2 months. i sent it back. it lasted about the same. the 3rd time it didn't work when i got it back. by that point i was really fricken pissed off.

they just sent me a refurbed unit that has lasted a year now.

when if it dies there is no way im buying another wii

sorry i was gonna suggest the same thing. Its not pirating if you back up your own copy and then play it from an external though... at least in my opinion. Plus the games will load faster.
