Sadly My Asus 8800 GTS of four years decided to have a seizure and die after playing Prototype. And thus I am in the market for a new card.

My system:
Windows XP
Opteron 175 S939 @ 2.53GHz
Asus A8N-SLI Premium

Considering the fact that I'm pretty much going to be CPU bottle necking most cards I need a little advice on what to get.
From what I've looked at a Radeon 6790 looks good to me. Or would I get any benefit from getting a 6850?

Thanks

Welcome to the forums.

What kind of 8800gts 320mb, 640mb or 512mb, there is a big difference!

Honestly I would buy a used card for that system.

how much system ram? and just saying crt doesn't let us know what the actual resolution is you want to play at.

Holy Hell am I brain dead today. It's 2 GB of RAM and I tend to use 1600x1200 for most games but I've been dropping it down to 1280x960 for most modern titles, or 1152x864 for Prototype.

yeah luckily you are on XP as 2gb would not cut it in some games with Vista/7. at 1600x1200; a 5750, 5770, or gts450 would be a decent level of card with your cpu.

Thanks for the info and putting up with my total lack of brain function. The main reason I've been looking at the 6790 is the improved IQ the 6000 series offers over the 5000 and current Nvidia cards.

Looking At the 6670 benchmarks again place that around 5-10FPS faster then the old 8800GT, which is more in the power band of my CPU.

8800gt will eat a 8800gts 640 for breakfast. :)
A 6670 is too exspensive at 100$ for its perfomance.

Seriously, I would go for a gts250 or 4850 type of card used for about 60$.
A gts250 or 4850 would be at least 50% faster then your old card. Anything more would not matter with your cpu.
