I need suggestions for a PCI video card to put in my old K6-2 system. I want to spend $120 or less and it has to be PCI. What card will give this system the most (gaming) bang???

Although it kills me to suggest it.. :)

Voodoo 3000 PCI.

That will run you about $120 including shipping.

A frient suggested a TNT2 Mach 64 PCI. Does the Voodoo 3000 beat that card? Sorry for my ignorance.

Depends on what kind of gaming...

Quake 3, you'll get more FPS than with a TNT

The TNT might give you better 2D and probably a better 3D quality picture, but will most definitely be slower.

That's just a guess from what I know about the cards. I've never seen either perform in 3D games.

No! Do not buy an M64!

These things are a pain, they use slow 64 bit memory, and aren't worth your time or money. The Voodoo3 3000 PCI is a great choice, nice solid, stable card that will work right out of the box.

A regular TNT2 might be three or four FPS faster than a V3 3000 however an M64 will not be faster at all. Savage4's are faster than M64's. These are definatly a card to avoid.

Actually I think the Voodoo line has better 3DNow! support, so it'd probably perform faster on a K6-2 system. The M64 doesn't use 64-bit memory, it just has a 64-bit memory bus.

yeah the v3 is always a good PCI card, also because it has well-tested drivers and broad support

Thanks for all the replies. I guess I will be on the lookout for a V3 3000 card. Any brand suggestions?

i thought everyone knew the TNT2 M64 was 64bit... it's slower, but MUCH slower at high res.

i am waiting to see what the models of the geforce2mx are like. I'd probably be spending close to $200 for a twin view model.

There's only one brand of Voodoo3 cards, 3DFX.

BTW, there is a $30 rebate on Voodoo3s, you can get a Voodoo3 2000 or 3000 for less than $100.

Do a search for for voodoo3 in the Hot Deals forum for examples.

STB is not the only manufacturer who makes Voodoo 3 cards. Falcon Northwest makes a Voodoo3 3500 which is hella-fast, clocked over 200 Mhz and there is one other company who makes them as well - can't remember the name but they also made a Voodoo2 SLI that was a single board... agg whats that name. Oh well.
