Need vid card replacement suggestion for 3 year old rig

The card in my gaming computer seems to be on its way out, and I don't have the cash for a full overhaul like I want to do. I need a new card that is a clear upgrade, but not complete overkill for the rest of my system. I have a 24" monitor. Would like to keep it around $200.

Current card is ATI x1900xt 512MB (PCI-e)

Rest of rig is:

Core 2 E6600
2GB DDR2
Gigabyte 965P-DS3 (rev. 2)
450w PSU

I appreciate any ideas -- thank you!

Thanks, nice price.

What does the following comparison me for me, in real world performance:

[Memory Bus Type]:
x1900xt = 32x8 (256 bit)
HD 5770 = 64x2 (128 bit)

I'm sure the 5770 is a superior card, but I'm just curious and nosey.

You will see a huge performance boost.

To answer your curiosity, the 5770 uses GDDR5 memory which effectively doubles the bandwidth over GDDR3 memory, which is what the X1900 uses.

Excellent - I'm pumped to get this card. Thanks again.

I love how a $160 card crushes my $400 card from a few years ago.

There are few options in that price range that some have left out like GTX260 216, 4890, 4870.

5770 is the slowest out of the bunch but easier on the power supply.

The 5770 maybe slightly slower than the 4870 at stock in most games now, but it will easily trounce it once you overclock. Almost all 5770s are monster OCers so you can do 925-950 easy. Max memory OC will vary though. 4870 probably won't OC as much so in the end the 5770 would win out.
I'd say the 5770 overclocked is the superior card to the 4870 and can become roughly on par with the stock 4890. 4890 can OC well though so it will be faster when both are OCed. 4870 should be on par with or faster than normal GTX 260 but slower than core 216.

Maybe 5770 is not the best solution, but it's a feasible solution in your case. Not so expensive and work very well!

I just looked at Newegg.ca and they have 4850 1GB's going for 113.00 CDN. Should only be around 90-95ish USD and there pretty fast. Not as fast or efficient as a 5770 but at a much better price and they are comparable.

About 3.25 Gbs, I use that setup so you can consider it pretty accurate. However, the exact number may vary a bit depending on other hardware used on your rig.

Oh well, that's still quite a bit more than 2GB. Worth it for $50. Thank you

Its worth it for many programs, you'll notice the difference if you multi task a lot. A lot easier to alt-tab around while gaming etc.. Wish I'd bought another 2gb last year when it was only $30.
