i havent ocd in a while so i'm out of the loop. but i'm catching up on some info. seeing as how my mobo's capacitors are leaking, im expecting it to die some time soon.
i'm still not sure whether or not i'm going to get the asrock with dualddr/ddr2 compatibility or the gigabyte ds3, but i digress

i recently purchased an e4300 and i'm in the process of picking other parts out
i currently have thissuperflower/ttgi psu
it's been good to me and it's fairly new. i've only had it for approx. a year, but it's a pretty outdated psu model.
the question is whether or not i should buy a new psu for this upgrade as i'm on a tight budget. are there new requirements for dual core cpus/ddr2/p965 boards/pciex16? and i don't really plan to use sli anytime soon if that's a factor.

any advice would be appreciated

EDIT: i went ahead and purchased the hx520w corsair for $85@zzf :) (despite the triple 12vrails warning)
and a 2gb xms2 kit
i'm still waiting for the rev3.3 ds3 price to come down a little bit

any recommendations for video cards? preferrably under $100. i've been looking for cheap 7600gt's. there's an evga for $90 AR at newegg, but i'm not sure if i should pull the trigger yet

I would try the superflower first. Mine works fine, and it's only 450w. You can always order another ps later. I like the fact mine has only one 12v rail. Many newer power supplies have 2 or more 12v rail connectors, which is no longer recommended.

I would say to try your current P/S first.

I ran my ASRock board with C2D and DDR2 ram and 4 HD's on a 4 or 5 yr-old Antec TruePower430 with no issues and it continued to work fine with my newer DS3 board as well. I only replaced the Antec 430 because it was getting so old and I got caught up in the whole "Power Supply upgrade" fever... truth is the old Antec works just as good as the new PCP&C unit. Power supplies usually work or they don't. ;)

I replaced my Antec PSU because of 1 reason. no 8pin connector for new mobo.

Also why is 2x 12v rails not recommended? I've never heard of that.

The reason the multi 12v rail setup isn't recommended is that is reduces the maximum amps available. It's better to get the maximum output on one connector than spliting it up. If you need more than one for sli, then enermax seems to have a much higher rating than some other brands.

i got curious and looked at intel's site. there's a list of recommended supported psus for core2s and they recommend atx12v version 2.2
the current psu's version is 1.1 (and i forgot to mention its 20pin, but found out you can easily fit a 20pin into a 24pin socket)
any harm done?
sorry if im just being paranoid, but i dont want to fry anything :(

EDIT: and in italics-
PS versions prior to 2.0 are not recommended for LGA775 processors.

You do have an old power supply. It may not even have the 4 pin 12v connector, but you can get an adapter for $3 for one of your 4 pin connectors that will let it work with newer motherboards. But if it's over 3 years old, I would replace it anyway. Fry's has antec power supplies on sale probably once a month. They also have an ultra 600w on their website for $65 (with $65 mail in rebate) plus $7 shipping = $7 shipped.

actually, it does have the 4pin 12v. but i guess it is pretty old. looking at the date on that psu review- it's release was 2003.
i'll just start looking for good deals. that corsair psu does look tempting. and yeah, im aware that fry's usually has pretty sweet deals when the right time comes, just like the one o1die and badthad posted. the only downside of that ultra is the lack of active pfc
I'll see what happens :)

thanks for all the advice
