need usb optical mouse help with windows me

I am about to reinstall windows me. I have an optical mouse. I gave my old one away. Normally the optical mouse does not work while windows is installing because it is not in windows. I seem to remember having a problem with windows me too. There was a setting I had to change to get the mouse to work correctly. If I plug in the serial adapter for the mouse will it work like a regular mouse? I was just wondering. I do not want to be stranded without a mouse since I am not familiar with the windows commands neeeded to work without one until I get it straightened out. thanks

A mouse will work fine as long as you have it plugged into the PS/2 with an adapter (I'm assuming it's a USB, and came with a USB to PS/2 adapter). It will not work while installing plugged into the USB port. It should work fine, because no software is needed to run the mouse, all operations are done inside the mouse circuitry.

I think I'm right on all this.
