Hey guys. Recently my computer has been shutting down on its own. The first thing i did was to check the temperature for my hardware but the temps seem normal. I then checked the power scheme and it is also normal. I ran a virus check, hard drive check and memory check and everything seems good. Now here is the weird part. When it shuts down, it shuts down like if you would press the power button. It says "windows is shutting down, saving your settings". I don't think its a PSU problem because if it was the computer would just turn off without giving me any notice. Please guys, help me!!!
 
How clean is your AC? Could it be low or sharing a circuit with anything that could put glitches on the line like a refrigerator or other heavy appliance? If so, you may want to try connecting to a plug on another circuit or, worst case, invest in a UPS or a line conditioner.

If your motherboard is old or has been around heat, check the electrolytic power caps. If any of them appears to be domed or there is any sign of leakage at the bottom, your motherboard is damaged. You MAY be able to replace them if you can find the right caps at a reasonable price, but you'll have to be very good at soldering and pretty lucky because it's very easy to damage the inner layers when removing components that go through holes in the circuit board.

My computer is the only thing connected to the wall socket in my room. I also checked the current with a multimeter and it is good. My mother is fairly new (1 year old) and has no leakage or sign of damage or burn parts.
 
Is it just shutting down with nothing running when it happens or are the fans still running? Do you hear any "click" type noise or get any indication of shutdown?

Have you tried just one memory module?

Are you using onboard or discreet video?

Just because you did a virus scan doesn't mean you don't have a virus. Sounds to me like a virus. Boot up your computer in Safe Mode and see if it restarts.

Yes it shuts off even in safe mode.

I dont here any clicks. It shuts down randomly. It says "Windows is shutting down".
 
You only answered part of my earlier question - have you tried a single memory module and are you using onboard or discreet video?

From experience when this happened and wasn't hardware it was malware/virus that got through on a friends laptop. Her kid clicked a "yes" box at a site he shouldn't have been at this started happening. The best AV is always defeated by the "yes" box click.

You don't say what you ran as far as AV/Malware checking.

What we're trying to do here is diagnose what is causing the problem... If you turn on the computer and then disconnect the power switch to see if it turns off. If it still turns off with the power switch disconnected, then you know it's not an issue with the power switch!

RAM: 4 Gb DDR3
HDD: 250 Gb western digital SATA drive
GPU: nvidia geforce GTS 450
OS: Win 7 64bit ultimate

This is the only error im getting.
The VMware USB Arbitration Service service terminated with the following error:
A device attached to the system is not functioning.
 
Is your keyboard PS2 or USB? Coulr this be a keyboard issue? Isn't there a place in BIOS where you can specify "power on/off by keyboard"?
I'm guessing here :>)
