How Congress got involved in the baseball strike, or how they got involved with steroids.
Or how the Pres. was once an owner of a baseball team...

how about the banning of pro-hormone supplements even though they should fall under the guidance of the Dietary Supplement Act. The cause of the ban is only related to the baseball and pro-sports banning. Politicians jumping the gun, again, on a product they know little about.

Or you could write about Ephedra. How it was legal, then illegal, then legal again when the FDA realized that many of the anecdotal evidence could not pinpoint ephedra as a problem. But even after that, they end up banning again, because people don't know how to follow directions.

Or You could write about something more local - like Virginia's governor strong-arming some of the ACC teams to accept Virginia Tech into the ACC, instead of Syracuse.

politics within the sports world, or how outside (ie: Washington) politics affect sports?

the fight over the new West Side Stadium in NYC might be worth a look. same for the fight over the new stadium in DC.

The Florida Marlins are attempting to get a new stadium built. They want the Florida legislature to make a new tax to fund it. People are up in arms about it. To hurry the state up, the Marlins began talking with Las Vegas city officials about building a stadium there. The legislature is pissed off at the Marlins and accused them of blackmail etc. etc. Hot topic right now.

Anti-trust exemption in baseball. Lately, any time a politician doesn't like something MLB is doing, he makes veiled threats that Congress will take that privilege away. That threat is underlying in the steroid issue, aborted attempt at contraction from a few years back, etc. You can write broadly on the history of the exemption (goes back to a court decision almost 100 years ago) or go into depth on one situation.

NFL teams that threaten city/state governments with moving away unless they get a new stadium. The Saints have an ongoing battle with the state of Louisiana.

General controversy over modern stadium funding, tax referendums

1990 steroid legislation, highly politically motivated

Tobacco bans in auto racing

All good ones, though I think the last should be reworded to "How Federal tobacco legislation has effected sponsorship and advertising in auto racing"

Title 9 effects federally funded universities and colleges, though KY have legislated something similar at the state level.
