Look for a Spokeshave on amazon. I wouldn't want to use this to remove a lot of wood though.

I guess I would start with chisels to get the wood close to the final size first.

dude, just get a knife of some kind already. what else do you expect to use if you want to hand carve? if its taken you 8 yrs already, whats another 8?

Care to make any reccomendations on one that will hold a working edge for a long time?

i would venture to guess any knife you use you will have to sharpen. my uncle used to carve walking sticks, whistles, trinkets, etc. all the time. all done with his pocket knife.

i can recommend this knife sharpener tho. puts on a good edge in a few strokes. just use that, and only that, or youll change the edge. actually, id recommend stiicking with the same sharpener you initially use for that reason. we use those at work, and they give the best edge with the least amount of time and effort.

doh: forgot the link here
we buy them from a local weed and feed, but you should be able to find them in a grocery store or walmart.

Is
this it?

Dremel.

Isn't using one without power tricky?

:p

You have to be quick;)

I have a 25% off Rockler coupon burning a hole in my pocket, thinking of getting this: http://images.rockler.com/Rock...es/bandsaw%20table.jpg

The D4 has been whispering sweet nothings to me.

FWIW, i used my $20 gerber knife to carve a stick and it worked fine. get one that has ~3" blade.
