Need to use proxy with linux

I have installed linux onto a new machine, and I need to access the internet to run package updates, however we have to run through a proxy server and I cannot get the box to use the proxy of our server. I am NOT using this machine as a proxy server, I am trying to CONNECT this machine to a proxy server. I am thankful for any help I can get.

What distribution of Linux?

export ftp_proxy="http://firewall.whatever😛ort"

Put those in one of your shell's startup scripts or type them every time before you run an app that needs to get to the net.
