Need to make a very large purchase through Newegg

I am the IT Specialist at the school I work for, and we're replacing a computer lab and equipment in 2 libraries, in total 44 computer systems and all the random stuff that goes with it like switches and cables. I need to order about $50K of equipment from some vendor for this project, and Newegg has all the best deals on what I need. Here's the hitch: Our school won't actually have the cash until mid-June. The other vendors I usually work with (CDW-G and Best Buy Corporate) offer up to 60 days delayed payment when using a PO, but Newegg doesn't offer anything like that. As a matter of fact, the only payment method capable of a payment that size is pre-paying by check.

I know a few guys here work for newegg, I'm hoping they might have advice, or anyone else who has worked with them on large purchases before. I called and talked to some CS rep and she couldn't care less that I wanted to spend that kind of money with them and didn't make an effort to accommodate me at all.

$50k isn't really that muchh money.

look into apple or dell for educational discounts.

and why are you spending money that you don't have?

We have the budget approved, and we need to get the project done this summer before school starts back up. We just can't wait until tuition payments start coming in to start working.

CDW has given me a quote, they're about $5K more than newegg.

Birmingham, AL recently did this when purchasing a few thousands laptops from Dell, thinking it will make the kids in their failing schools smarter. Of course it didnt, and a few years later, Dell filed a lawsuit against the city for lack of payment. I sure as hell wouldnt do it if I were newegg.

$5k is nothing to a school/government...
If you are REALLY concerned about that amount of money, call up your sales rep at CDW and show them the quote from newegg. They may match it.

We are a private school, and the normal annual technology budget isn't even $100K. A $5K difference is pretty big to us.

I know CDW is normally bad, I might try to get them to match Newegg. Best Buy corporate is usually pretty good though, I just haven't heard back from my rep yet. And before you go bashing BB (I hate the stores as much as you do), BB corporate is as good as BB stores are bad.

I work for a Charter school and we did a $25k order with Newegg last fall. We used a Cashiers Check, and even got a huge shipping discount by going freight.

But their value added services more than make up for it. They will match just about any price. All hardware places will.

i use CDW for some things as well, but they know im a reseller so i get to bargain with them a lot. if i show them a quote from insight.com for 15% less than they are giving me, they will beat the price by 2% usually. just takes some talking usually. you being the end customer is probably why they wont give you better pricing.

as for schools not having cash, your budget exists when you have the money. spending next years budget over the summer before its appropriated isnt the smartest way to go about it. if they want you to finish the project before school starts, they need to come up with the cash ahead of time, or at leat have a line of credit worked out. many of the cities i work with have line of credit with major supply houses, and can get up to 3 months delayed. they pay for that option tho.

Have you contacted newegg about it? It's not generally their target market, but for a decent sized order like that they might work out a deal. Maybe part of the payment up front, then the remainder a month after delivery.

that's cause Newegg isn't meant for such a thing. for large purchases, dell, cde or other OEM vendors are meant. they also have better warrenty.

they would have been WAY better off spending that money on new books and a new teacher

Are you buying prebuilt machines or parts to build 44 systems by hand? If you were planning to build these by hand you are better off going with a Dell or HP solution where you can use their warranty services and enterprise management tools (Dell OpenManage, etc..). I'm a huge fan of building PC's for home use, for which Newegg is great. If I had to manage 44 boxes there's no way I'd even consider the headaches of keeping up with warranty coverage on all of the various parts in each machine plus the time and effort involved in putting them all together. You may save a few bucks short-term going the DIY route but it will cost you much more in time and effort down the road.

Dell's web managed switches are actually pretty decent and affordable if you hadn't looked at them as well.

If you get their credit card, they give you 6 months 0 percent interest which should work for you.

Even considering the educational discounts offered us we still saved about $10k going through Newegg, and local shops were over $10k higher than Dell. As I stated earlier Newegg even contacted us back and arranged freight shipment, saving us another $200. That included 50 odd computers, a dozen flat screens, and the misc hardware for the server and networking, all delivered within a week.

I was able to setup our entire IT infrastructure, computer lab, and teachers computers for about $35k total, $25k of that from Newegg. Dell quoted us over $32k for computers alone, no networking, software (other than OS), or server hardware.

The problem I see with government and the educational system is that few people care enough to try and save some money. The money we saved in our IT program was then passed on to other areas in the school that were short on funds.

Newegg's Preferred account is stupid, they told me that they don't set up business accounts, it has to be tagged to a person's SSN. We do have one with a 5K limit but there's no way they're going to raise it to 50 for us. I might call Newegg back and talk to a supervisor to see if they'll work with me because I really want to buy from them. I might be able to get CDW to match them but my experience with CDW has been less than positive so far.

I customized a system on Dell Educational's site and it came to $1500 for the same hardware we can get through the Egg for $800. I called to get a rep and talk about it but I got stuck in a phone loop. Their CS has never impressed me and still fails to do so.

So the parts you plan on buying from newegg, are you going to build yourself? If so, do you know how you will handle all repairs/warranty/etc?
